Want to get away from it all? Try Scobey, Montana

Scobey is the home of KCGM-FM 95.7. It’s ownership statement at the FCC is bit unusual. Paraphrasing it, the North East corner of Montana has only about 2,000 people and had no radio stations – so the folks got together and raised money to build a station and handed out stock certificates.

Scobey airport has a 3800 foot runway, a 9 hole golf course, and you can be in Canada in half an hour. It also has used to have a railroad and a river.

Here is the one flashing light in the middle of downtown Scobey. Be sure you own a pickup truck or they’ll realize you’re a furrener.

Is it just me or does that look a lot like the station from Vanishing Point?

One expects Supersoul to come out of the door.

I actually got that movie reference. 8^P The biggest difference is the daytime temperature outside.

I’ve toyed with the idea of creating a collection of Google Earth street views of all 15,000 radio stations in the United States

Gosh, you mean they didn’t petition the gum’ment to provide money, since radio is a right?

Heck, they’re big time – they got themselves a traffic light!
About 15 yrs. ago we moved out to rural AR to raise our kids. I remember on the drive home from work one day listening to a NPR story of a judge who had retired (from I think it was W. VA.) State Supreme Court who was volunteering at the 1 room elementary school he had attended. They said the county was so sparsely populated they only had 1 traffic light. Well I laughed so hard at that thought – until I realized the county I was living in at the time had NO traffic lights at all.
But they have since installed one in the county seat because the jr. college (which was upgraded from a truck driving school) needed to interrupt the main drag traffic so the students could turn in.
Interesting note: at the time it was disclosed that the percentage of people in the county receiving a government check was 77%. That included social security (lots of old people retired there) and welfare.
