Who are the streaming holdouts?

Busy, busy, busy… a lot of stations added streaming in the last 6 or so months – the total is now over 8,700 – closing in on 60% of all licensed stations.

So who are the holdouts why haven’t yet figured that streaming has a role in their future?

MCC does actually stream, they just don’t want “out of market” listeners to use their streams.   About half of the list I recognize as radio owners who have had the owner die, have been in bankruptcy or receivership, station brokers who “flip” stations for profit, or people who are just not early adopters – the type that don’t even have a station web site, and probably still have rotary dial phones and typewriters with carbon paper and think the minimum wage was just fine at $1.10 an hour.

I know Galaxy used to stream, but they decided to shut it off. Twice. Don’t ask me why.

    • Art Stone says:

Maybe they looked at the stats and saw their listener peak was 4 people and 3 of those were in the radio station.

what happened to the streaming radio web page

  3. MorebellaMorbid says:

Where is our page of radio stations? I don’t want to to be made to read comments. Come on guys. Stop it with this stuff. Give us our radio stations back!

    • Art Stone says:

So when did my work become your property?

      • Robrrt says:

After all of the many (thousands?) hours of free volunteer contribution and labors of love that others have put into this site, all I can say to that is… wow

        • Art Stone says:

You can help make the directory more complete and accurate for its visitors by helping to confirm information in the directory and submitting information about problems that you have found.

In the future, we may permit trained volunteers to directly maintain other information in the database.

Okay, here is a list of disclaimers about volunteering to help:

          – You are a volunteer – you are not being paid to perform this work.
          – We may decide for any reason or no reason to end the volunteer program and/or your participation in it.
          – Decisions about what appears in the directory is up to the owner. This web site is not a democracy.
          – Chocolate is not one of the basic food groups.
          – While the directory generates no revenue today and carries no advertisements, that could change in the future.

You agree not to demand payment or claim an ownership interest in the database for your volunteer contributions.

          Sound familiar?

what happenened to streaming radio and how do you log on to it?

  5. indymurph says:

Do you plan on reinstating your very useful lists of streaming radio? I used it almost everyday and work and really loved it. Hope you haven’t given up for good.

Streaming Radio, Streaming Radio, Streaming Radio… NOW!

“Stop. Look. Listen.” …………… Crickets chirping. RIP Streaming Radio Guide.

    • Art Stone says:

The silence is deafening, isn’t it?

      • MrC_5150 says:

Very. Seeing how I don’t watch television and relied on Streaming Radio Guide for my talk radio interests. Fortunately I bookmarked a few stations but will miss perusing the guide for something new to listen to. Hope you change your mind and give it new life.

For those who allowed themselves to be forced to read the blog, I’ve encouraged people a number of times to bookmark things that are important to them because some day the web site might go away with little or no notice.

  8. Uziboots says:

So Streaming Radio is gone? Very sad then to read this.
Not even a real mention of why it is gone just these posts that seem to confirm my fears.

Well, I enjoyed it while it was up and used it almost every day to access talk radio sites all over the place. I suppose we are unworthy of official word as to what happened.

SO far the only thing I found that resembles is http://radiotime.com/genre/c_2/Spoken.aspx and that is a weak replacement.

My theories regarding the disappearance of SRG:
1). A Soros/Media Matters campaign to expand the “War on Fox News” to websites that carry Fox News streaming radio programs.
2). Clear Channel communications bought it out, and soon visitors here will be directed straight to the CC lineup.
3). Diversity Czar Lloyd shut it down because not enough “minority-owned” radio stations had streaming links.
4). Space aliens kidnapped Art Stone and phished his blog account.
5). Fairness Doctrine was unknowingly slipped into the 2011 budget bill that just passed.
6). Insert crazy conspiracy theory here….

    • Art Stone says:

Well, done! :) Although for the sake of argument, you’ll need to assume that #4 is not accurate.

#1) No, I’m already part of the Cabal to “get” Glenn Beck without being blackmailed or paid off by Soros
      #2) Who?
#3) My links are all the same color
#4) Mep! How did you find out I’m from Remulak?
      #5) I don’t receive Federal funding
#6) I’ve moved to Costa Rica, living in a commune with John Galt

  10. Hesperus says:

It’s very likely this shall be my last post in this blog. Just chiming in to say that I’ve seen this day coming for a quarter of a year or more. The changes in Art’s tone and mood have consistently and implacably pointed to a building apparent desire to be rid of maintaining the streaming radio part of his work. I don’t believe there ever was very much hope for it to continue from the start of these verbal tells. I can’t help but sense a strain of petulance in the blunt-force, no-notice shutdown, but I’m at a loss at to the real reasons why or to whom the passive aggressive behavior was directed. In saying my long goodbye to everyone, especially to Art — The guide was masterfully done, so well that some of us became almost dependent upon it. I used it almost every day, and tried to support Art’s requests as best I could. So, for as long as it lasted, THANK YOU, Art Stone, for a wonderful bit of work. IT WAS APPRECIATED. At this point, I only wish it died a more graceful death. Adieu.

  11. forbin1 says:

Sorry to see the guide go, but thanks Art for all your work in the past.

Enjoy your new life in Galt’s Gulch
