Who is the customer?
My opinion: without the constraints of limited competition ensured by FCC licensing, listerners are no longer cattle to be packaged and sold to advertisers. The listeners are the radio station’s customer, not the advertisers. If you attract a desirable group of listeners, advertisers will pay to reach them. The government created fences people paid to to buy licenses to keep your listeners from wandering away no longer mean much and the value of the over the air monoploy is diminishing each day.
My recent polls suggests that most people understand that the “customer” for a web site is primarily the people who listen to the radio station, not potential or current advertisers. The advertisers are a source of revenue to fund operations, but only if you have visitors to the web site. If the web site is overwhelmed with ads and no interesting content, people won’t come back.
Welcome to the era of the New Media.
