Boston Herald doesn’t think Howard Ster…

Boston Herald doesn’t think Howard Stern will quit Sirius-XM after all and that the talk a couple months ago was just a negotiating ploy… the article notes that terrestrial radio probably can’t take him because they’re all in debt (though he erroneously blames Limbaugh– he fails to mention that the $400M contract he gets is based on the ad revenue he personally brings in… doesn’t mention all the bad purchases that are the real problem). It also notes that Sirius would have Stern over a barrel for that very reason, and because they’re still not making money several years later, Stern would have to make serious givebacks to keep doing his show.

      Quack Quack!

But more seriously, with the MSU in your name, I’m going to guess you are college age – which gets right to the weakness on Howard’s contract negotiation… he’s been away from “regular” radio long enough and is getting old enough that he probably is now weak with the younger crowd. Who really wants to listen to a guy the age of their grandfather ogling the breasts of models and talking about Walter Cronkike’s bathroom habits? Where is your facebook page? What’s going on with twitter?

There are probably lots of reasons to not do it (including restrictions by the lenders)… I wonder if Clear Channel were to split off Premiere and do an IPO how many billions they could raise for it…. If Premiere wasn’t captive to Clear Channel, they would have more freedom to move affiliates to non-CC stations to maximize their revenue…. At least it would unblur the lines of just how much revenue Rush, Beck, et al are bringing in the door separate from the issue of the valuation of radio station licenses.

    Just a thought.

Thanks. Actually I wish I were of college age…..I am 63 and now retired due to the incredible economy…..Worked for over 50 years and then this.
I just LOVE anything to do with MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY.
    NEVER have liked howard, NEVER.

Now Im mad as hell., Howard makes more money than I can even fathom, 400 million ? Crap, Ive worked all my life since I was 18 and got forced into retirement after 48 yrs at 65 yrs of age and probably never came near making that much money in all my working career.

My thought is Why would Sirius even consider bringing Stern into the fold,? He has about as much appeal as a wet mop, and one reason that I didnt buy a Sirius receiver, and went with XM instead, just my luck that they merged. I still wouldnt pay for the extra programming that would include Sirius

If you read my brief history of CBS radio, it has most of the answer to your question….

The short version is a guy named Mel Karmazin was running a radio company named Infinity buying up loser radio stations and turning them around. Among his employees were one Howard Stern and one Don Imus who started to kick the butt of “conventional” radio. Infinity was doing so well, they managed to talk their way into taking over the old venerable CBS radio, creating an immediate corporate culture clash. Eventually, Sumner Redstone of Viacom jumped in to “save” CBS from Stern and Mel, so Mel went off and formed Sirius and then brought along Stern as soon as Stern could get out of his contract. A good part of Sirius’s income is due to the $20/month Stern’s fans are willing to pay… It’s $400 million over 5 years…. so if Stern was able to get 1 milion subscribers, that’s 12 * 20 million a year… ($240 million).

This is why subscription radio is a big threat – you can buy a lot of entertainment for that money…. and don’t have to fund it with 14 minutes/hour of ads for anti-itch creams. Jesse Jackson and Media Matters can’t organize boycotts of your sponsors, because you have no sponsors.
