I dont mind the pre-stream ads but I do wish the volume was lower on them.

Amen!
Some of the players deliberately disable mute and force the player volume to 100% – it’s not your imagination or just accidental. This used to be such a big problem on Over the Air broadcasting that the FCC has a rule now that ads cannot be “turned up” to be louder than the programming. How or if that is enforced, I’m not sure – I remember seeing while looking for the rules about having to identify that a program is sponsored.
The rule used to be this: (and I assume still is) the volume of commercials cannot be louder than the loudest tone in the program. In other words if the loudest sound was a “level 10” the commercials are “louder” because they will be consistently at level 9 or 10 whereas the program itself may be around 5 and rarely reach the 10 level.
I hope I am explaining this clearly… (sinus headache today)
Of course, even that’s murky – with digital processing “loud” is not necessarily the same thing as maximum volume, since the human hearing is not even remotely linear by frequency. For instance, men can’t generally hear well the frequency range of the normal female speaking voice, and the older we get, the more true that typically is.
Male doctors reject my complaints of hearing difficulty because I can hear their male voice in a quiet room. But put me in a noisy room with a female voice, i”m only guessing what they are saying – especially if I can’t see their lips. “Modern medicine” has lots of holes in its understanding of “”how things work”.
Am I far enough off topic yet?
