Oh but they’re sooooooo gooooood. Especiallh if you get to boig ole glazed ones while they’re still warm. Dunkin Doughnuts couldn’t touch those. Are they going out of business or just retreating to the South where they’re entrenched?

This was the last one in New England. Wikipedia has more of the history… They also tried and failed in California and Hong Kong… Among other places

Eating out is one of the first things to go in a recession – Uno Pizzeria declared bankruptcy today and plans to close some of its restaurants

As of last week the one in Scranton PA was open, it’s been there for decades. You can go there, sit and watch the dounuts being made in the back. It’s like a doughnut factory. It made the doughnuts for all the markets. Cool place, but go there during the day. They use to be open 24 hours but had to start closing the front part at night because they were getting robbed

It was a nice neighborhood 20 years ago but it sort of became shakey some years back.

One of their coping strategies to reduce costs has been to shut down the donut machines in the stores, and deliver them from another store. Since watching the machine and the donuts being hot are two of their attractions, that doesn’t help either.

Many people first become aware of Krispy Kreme because of fund-raising. Back in my youth in Western Pennsylvania, about once a year people would show up door-to-door selling donuts (they were $1 a dozen back then). That fund-raising activity used to be a major source of their income and visibility that would cause people to search them out. They weakly tried to get their donuts in the grocery stores, but at $6/dozen for cold stale donuts, they didn’t exactly fly off the counter.

There’s only 2 left near Pittsburgh. The fact that I had to google it to realize all the ones I’ve visited are now closed says a lot.
