Google wants to be your Internet provider – they have plans to roll out very high speed fiber based Internet access. This needs looking into – they must have tons of money for this – running fiber is very expensive. (Obama stimulus money?)
According to the news stories I found, Google wants to roll out fiber to the home at 1 Gb/sec bursting, which would allow downloading an entire HD movie in 90 seconds. They are asking cities to come make them an offer. Cities that own rights to put fiber up on power poles would have a big leg up. Given the economic boom it could be to recruiting high tech firms, the cities might even overlook wanting to charge Google to use their poles.
Getting the “final mile” this fast would put enormous pressure on the internet backbone…. I wonder who is running that these days…. I kind of stopped tracking who all the Level 1 backbone providers are…
