32% of all births are now C-Sections – that’s the hot item in today’s news. Over-treatment in medicine (mammograms, PSA screening, hypertension medication for diabetics, C Sections) seems to becoming a theme…. we have a lot of money to save.

There are a lot of OB/GYNs who tend to prefer c-sections mostly to prevent complications which lead to them being sued. It will be interesting to see how this changes in time with Obamacare restricting or rationing health care but of course the lawyers who run the county refuse to do anything about tort reform and frivolous litigation.
I know of a county in our state that has one of the highest per-capita rates of medical practice lawsuits in the country. Because of that, many of the OB docs in that county tend to send patients in labor who are having complications via air ambulance to a hospital 2 hours away that specializes in high risk deliveries…
Any idea how much an air ambulence costs?
A typical air ambulence from California to North Carolina (that’s more than a 2 hour trip) costs about $35,000
