The sales tax is a 1% extra dedicated to MARTA. A $120 million shortfall therefore means that retail sales were off $12 billion just in Atlanta.
This was temporarily masked by “stimulus” money to “save” [government employee] jobs, but the chickens have come home to roost. The stmulus money is gone. Raising fares on publuc transit starts the spiral of fewer riders, service cutbacks, increased fares, fewer riders… People are pushed into buying old cars or give up working and going on government handouts. The poor and disabled are the people most dependent on public transit.
Keep strangling private business and just watch all the unintended consequences…
I understand the poor are affected, which is unfortunate, but have you seen how many buses are empty most of the time? Too many routes I think.
And a question for the Greenies: how can you justify the empty buses with your environment stances?
