Could it have something to with the ‘Green Mountain Boys Militia’ and disputes between New York and New Hampshire ??

Here is a clue. If you thought George Washington was an anti-government terrorist and had no issue with being a subject of the Queen/King of England and helped fight against the American Revolutionists, when the war was over and the British went home, your life became very unpleasant. Many were executed, but many fled North to British North America (Canada), which remained loyal to the crown. If you look at a map and keep in mind that the Allegheny Mountains were basically the Western edge of the country, to flee to Canada, you’re probably heading through Vermont. Maine also wasn’t part of the original 13.

This flared up again during the War of 1812. Ask a Canadian some time to explain the War of 1812, and see what you weren’t taught in school.

For extra credit – why was American Francis Scott Key on board a British ship while they were bombarding Fort McHenry?

        • prboylan says:

He was dining with British Officers while assisting in negotiations for release of his friend Dr. William Beanes who had been arrested earlier by the British in Md. The negotiations for Beanes’ release had been completed but Key’s party was obliged to remain on board for operational security reasons while the British fleet attacked Ft. McHenry.

What was Mr Key’s occupation and what were his political views about the War of 1812 and U.S. Military actions in British North America?

Since he was not in the US Military and not an official of the US Government, when he was negotiating for the release of his friend, what did he have to offer the British in return?

Canadians I’ve talked to about 1812 believe “they” beat “us” and that it was largely an attempt to seize their land. (They wish – or they ought to)

Wasn’t Vermont part of NY at the time, same as Maine being part of Mass.?

Here’s an interesting little book I was flipping through at the store a while back…
