Being a Memphis resident, I can say that Ben was regarded as a legend in his own mind.
He has a tendency to say the same statement 3 to 4 times in a row, which can be very irritating, very irritating, very irritating.
Before he took over the afternoon slot, however, there was another guy who was so old he forgot what he was saying in the middle of a sentence.
So be careful what you wish for.
Me, I’m wishing for a syndicated major name, as opposed to the local talent being thrust at us.
A music radio guy in his newsletter about a month ago pointed out that many songs that became hits and stay popular for decades share having a lot – a lot – of repeating phrases that repeat a lot.
Hey Jude.
Nah, nah, nah nah nah nah nah….
I wonder wonder wonder who – wrote the book of love?
For a variation on a theme, I like the story about the song “Horse with no name” – it was the result of a bet that a song could be written using only 2 notes for the first 30(?) seconds and become a #1 hit. I’m thinking that must have been a Joey Reynolds show story – it’s not the kind of stuff I usually care about.
Memphis follow up: It appears they have replaced Ben (at least in the interim) with the weekend guy, a black conservative named Andrew Clarksenior. He is local talent, and a very good talent and choice I must admit. Don’t listen much onthe weekends and I forgot about him.
Looks like WREC got it right.
