I have an iLUV internet radio. I like to…

I have an iLUV internet radio. I like to listen to wabc at night. Appearantly, WABC, KABC, WMAL and some other of my fav’s have switched their streaming format to aac+ (?) and according to Frontier Silicon, who handles the iLuv interface, the radios chipset can’t handle this aac+ format. Why did they change formats, why can’t my radio handle it and what radios handle every format? ( I always can come here to stream but my lappy is a little big for the bedside table ;)

    Patents.

I got partway through my wireless device howto and got distracted. AAC (in its various flavors) is MP4. The MP3 format is covered by a patent by a company in Germany – they are demanding unreasonable terms for using their technology – they not only want a fee for using their patents in the implementation in software and firmware, but want a percentage of the ad revenue from all streaming that uses MP3 technology. That means letting the patent holder look at your financial records. MP4/AAC was worked out ahead of time so it doesn’t have this issue.

However MP3 playlists (.m3u, .pls) don’t give a hint of how the actual stream is encoded – a few bizarros even stick Windows Media streams inside the MP3 playlists – that works on WinAmp and WMP (m3u only), but it really isn’t quite right.

Mobile and Wireless devices have some risks of becoming boat anchors – many of them are tied to a station list maintained by the manufacturer or a third party like Reciva or Radiotime. If that relationship goes away or tge manufacturer goes out of the business, you may be back to entering streaming URLs by hand, which can be tedious or close to impossible.

It will get sorted out eventually, but for now you’re on the bleeding edge.

I have an ancient laptop on my bedside table, but I now use the iPhone + ooTunes for most of my streaming (over WIFi). That works for about 3/4ths of the stations. If you don’t need the phone and only use it where you have wifi, an iPod Touch is a relatively inexpensive alternative…

WABC works again on my iLUV. The frontier interface shows WABC again as an MP3 64K.
The player on WABC says it is AAC+. Confused
