The Barack Obama “Social Security Number” controversy…. here we go again… This one someone has some ‘splaining to do

I actually have some direct knowledge about this topic – I worked as an intern the summer of 1973 for the Social Security administration. Two years earlier, when I had gotten my own number, the process was that numbers were issued by the local Social Security office. They had pre-printed cards in sequential order. You got the next card on the list, and your registration card was sent into the regional office for entry into the computer. If you got your social security card before 1973, it identifies the office (city) where you got the card, not just the state.

By 1973, the process was changed – the application card was mailed to the central office to research if it was a duplicate, etc… and they mailed out the preprinted “original” card to the address on the card (thereby also confirming the address was valid). This was a bit of an issue with some people, since they “needed” the card “today” to start a new job. About that time, the SSA started issuing the SS# at birth, and actively encouraging all children to get their number ahead of time – prior to turning the age to get a job when they “needed” it.

The post-1973 process still ties your Social Security number to the state you were living in when the card was issued. The SSA processing center for you (and where you original card was sent)is segmented based on that original decision. Since I was living in North Carolina, when I retire (right!), my claims will be processed by the regional center that is responsible for North Carolina, even though I no longer live in that part of the country.

So what’s the problem with Barack Obama’s social security number? Worldnet Daily put some professional talent on their search. The investigators were able to confirm that the number beginning with 042- was used by Barack Obama to register for the draft (which should have happened when he turned 18 in 1979)…. but 042- is assigned to Connecticut, and the person that number was issued to was born in 1890.

The WND story spends a lot of effort talking about his job working in Hawaii at a Baskin Robbins – that he must have been issued his number for that job, but that’s a bit inconclusive. He might have worked for cash and his employer didn’t file taxes. But the fact he never lived in Connecticut, and appears to have a bogus social security number is more than a little interesting. I wouldn’t rule out that the entire thing is a red herring – that some accommodation is made to Presidents to protect their privacy through a special social security number, but that’s highly unusual. About the only time that is done that I know of is when two people used the same social security number and it is discovered at some point and they need to split out the earnings history for each person and clean up the mess (sometimes siblings used the same SS# not realizing that they each needed a different one)

This one has more legs – although at the end of the story, it doesn’t really prove anything by itself, other than perhaps he (or his mother) just made up a random social security number when he wanted to get a job. The WND throws out the word “illegal” over and over – that is very irritating to me. Even if everything they suspect is true, any illegal act done by his mother or himself is so far beyond any statute of limitations…. Impeachment is ONLY for acts the President has done in office. He’s admitted to illegal drug use as a young man, but you can’t impeach him for that.

The election is over. He won. Get over it.
