BP’s flotilla and some of the people involved in this effort. I’m going out of my way to buy gasoline at the BP station.
It’s from a distance – it kind of looks like the cut has been done, and it is leaking like crazy – for now.

This “fix” today (assuming it goes as planned) is only temporary. BP has a drawing on their web site of the ultimate arrangement. Having the weight of the riser sitting on the damaged / leaning BOP – especially with hurricane season coming – is not a good long term plan.
The Free Standing riser stands on the ocean floor and is weighted down to keep it in place vertically. It has an emergency cutoff valve so the recovery ships can scram in the event of a storm. The equipment that was used to try to do the Top Kill will be a second path out. I think I read/heard that will be used to seperate out most of the methane and then flare it off – keeping the gas (and its erratic effect on pressure out of the oil riser)
