Tom Taylor is leading with speculation that Mel Karmazin might become the new head of Clear Channel – now that’s a bombshell if it has any substance.
The reasons why Mel would not do that overlook a different possibility – that Clear Channel could spin off Premiere and/or Clear Channel Radio into a merger or joint venture with Sirius / XM. Remember there is satellite (FM-5) in geosync orbit launched a year or so ago that needs a purpose. FM-6 is scheduled for next year they are generally there to replace the eliptical orbit Sirius satellites, but being 10 years newer and more powerful probably have interesting additional abilities.
I smell major change in the air. There is a lot of idle money out there looking for a purpose – but too smart to invest in FCC radio licenses.
