The coming EU / Russia Security alliance

A week ago, Germany organized a meeting of EU foreign ministers and Russia to discuss the possibility of creating a European Security alliance – similar to a NATO, but with no United States.

One of the key events in the 1930s was the Russian/German non-aggression pact of 1939. With the two countries making peace, that emboldened Germany to start taking over Western Europe – which held until Germany decided it needed to attack Russia. Presumably, some people still remember WW2, but not those who stood in the streets of Europe cheering for Barack Obama.

A Security alliance begs the question of who the EU+Russia is protecting against – the United States? England? Islam?

Or are the EU and Russia possibly “threatened” by ….. Israel? Russia is entrenched in arms deals with Islamists throughout the middle east; the United States is the only country that has strong ties to Israel, so if that country were a target, you would naturally exclude its best (possibly only) ally. Can you say “Armageddon?”

This stuff can drive you crazy trying to analyze it.
Maybe they see how wishy-washy this Administration is regarding Israel, so they think maybe we won’t hold up our NATO end, so they better CYA (Cover Their Assets) with Russia.
Maybe they just don’t like dealing with this Administration.
Or maybe they think the Administration won’t be around much longer anyway.
(I know, too much wishful thinking).
