France has a problem.   40 years ago, collectivists in France decided to build a Utopian planned community to house immigrants from Africa and other French colonies, since so-called French “culture” was at risk of vanishing, due to declining birth rates.  So if you spoke French, you were worth allowing to come and live in France to help keep the French Culture alive.

Now Villeneuve (a suburb of Olympic site Grenoble) erupts each night in violence, burning cars and gangs of aimless roaming youth.  President Nicolas Sarkozy has now taken the position that “insufficiently regulated immigration” have “led to a failure of integration.”.  

Mr Sarkozy has proposed drastic limits on immigration and other measures that the French people broadly support.    As a member of the E.U., France must allow people from any country in the E.U. to legally settle in France, in the same way people from Texas can’t tell a person from New York they can’t live there.  So the most France can do is keep out people from outside the E.U.

    Thanks for the article. Just wanted to clarify something:

    That’s only part right. While Texas can’t bar people from New York explicitly while allowing people from other states, they can set arbitrary limits on all immigration into Texas. They could stop all immigration into Texas and stop all housing construction if they so wanted.

      I would draw your attention to the 14th Amendment:

      1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

      I am a citizen of the United States, therefore I have all the same rights in Texas that a person residing in Texas does. Or were you suggesting refighting the Civil War?
