I listened to the “infamous clip” and found it completely innocuous. What is truly disturbing (other than losing one of the few sane voices dispensing advice to the masses in our society) is Dr Laura being ousted over such trumped up hysteria for merely citing an EXAMPLE of “speech hypocrisy” exercised EVERYDAY by some segments of our society.
When I heard that she was quitting (and why) my first reaction was this: the First Amendment just came another step closer to death for all Americans.
Let us all flip a mental bird to those who ousted Dr. L
There’s an evolution of culture and language and as a consequence of this words change meaning. Half a century ago, “feeling gay” wouldn’t have even raised a smile or raised an eyebrow in many circles. Reading the Adventures of Huck Finn makes this post-racial Gen-Xer blush for it’s liberal use of the N-word…but I, like Dr. Laura, struggle to understand the N-word’s place in our American mass language & culture.
If a segment of our society is free to use the word, even in a derisive or pejorative manner (as opposed to a friendly greeting such as “Hello N*****, how are you today?”) is it fair to hold out a different standard and mete out punishment to others who wish to use the word, and in this instance, in a less harmful context than it’s more common use in black to black communication?
I am struggling to think of another word with a shifted meaning and still has a split rule of use. OK for some, but not for others and, if the wrong person crosses that line, watch out brother.
My biggest regret is that Dr. Laura silenced herself by not playing the game right and she is a voice of reason and consistency that will be missed. After listening to her for many years, I am surprised she played into the hands of her detractors and gave them what they couldn’t achieve on their own.
The left has been gunning for Dr. Laura for a long time, and I’m sure she is just plain tired of dealing with their nonsense. She had been accused of “hate speech” for expressing her OPINION that homosexual behavior was immoral (they ignored the rest of her OPINION, which included the admonition that it was equally immoral for straight people to treat gays badly or discriminate against them, and that gays who adopt children should be praised for their compassion and decency), and threatened violence in some cases toward personnel of radio stations that continued carrying her program. I thought it was a mistake for her to apologize to these people for having an OPINION, but that act seems to have made her vulnerable to further attacks. I hope she writes a ton of books, makes oodles of money and continues to be a force despite her opposition.
Dr. Laura’s programs are close to “evergreen”, meaning that you can’t tell if the show is live or was done 5 years ago. She does often start the show talking about some current day topic, but it would be pretty easy to edit together calls into programs.
I’m pretty sure she owns her shows, not Premiere. Leaving live “radio” still leaves some options.
I wonder if TRN isn’t paying her as much as she’d like…? Despite what Talkers magazine was saying, she’s been on a slow decline in the number of stations she’s been on– not to mention the quality of those stations and the time slots those stations give her– for several years now, particularly on the East Coast, as talk has become more political and less lifestyle-oriented. Perhaps Mr. Masters decided it wasn’t worth the money anymore.
Good point :) I made that same mistake a few days ago – she switched to TRN about a year ago. According to my math, she’s now 63.
The other day, Michael Savage dropped a hint, but I don’t put a lot of stock in anything he has said for a while. He was thinking out loud on the air that he might quit radio at the end of the year, or possibly go to weekends only….
If I recall right, I think Premiere and TRN are sharing duties as far as the show goes, while Laura’s “Take on the Day” still owns the rights. It’s kind of a petty detail, but it is what it is.
I just came back to adjust my correction :)
The deal from last year is that TRN handles the syndication and affiliate relations, and Premiere handles the satellite distribution and sells the National Ad inventory. TOTD (Take on the Day) is her company that handles producing the show and running the web site and related ventures.
The last time I did a Dr. Laura search, seven of ten hits were homosexual sex sites or outright Dr. Laura slanders and calumnies of the rankest sort. Hmm. What’s to quit?
