Phil Hendrie Goes Local

We seem to have a trend.   Tom Taylor’s newsletter reports today that TRN’s Phil Hendrie will be doing a 7-10PM local show on KFI in Los Angeles on Saturdays.   This comes a few days after Rusty Humphries announced he will be doing a local show at WGST in Atlanta.

The syndicated show is on 10 PM – 1 AM Pacific (1AM-4AM Eastern) which is not conducive to building a large audience.   A little known piece of Hendie history is he did a local show on KTLK-AM in Los Angeles for the hour before his TRN syndicated show – shortly after he returned to radio from his TV career.   It’s back when he was attempting to be taken seriously as a Progressive political commentator.

Phil has talent plus. plus but he kind of reminds me of transporting nitro to oil wells in the olden days – when everything goes well – Hallelujah, if not? Oy Vey!

The first time I heard Hendrie, I was not fooled by the gag interview that he often does and wondered how anyone could be. Then my own brother spoke to me about the s.o.b freaks Hendrie finds to put on the air. So….

And now, Art, a question: Have you made commenting on selected items taboo (e.g., The “Smart” war escalates, and the Weyrich piece) on purpose? Or is the trouble in my set? I’m just sayin….

  3. ICCDude says:

Yeah Art, we wanna comment on the “Smart War” item.
And I would not throw you into the briar patch or under the bus.
May disagree with you OCCASIONALLY, but if we all agreed with each others we’d be clones on Jim Rome’s show.

Phil did some great work on KFI in the 90s. The standards will probably be higher than on TRN late-night, but I think Phil can be more creative when forced to “work clean” and have some limits to push against. I first discovered him on Minnesota’s big clear channel station, WCCO 830. He found plenty of ways to get people riled up without getting too extreme.

I heard about the first hour before I fell asleep. After the preample of how great it was to be back on KFI, his first guest was the ex-con child molestor Herb Sewell. There was some story in the news about how a child molestor who had been in jail for 15 years was released recently and then arrested by police following a tip from a woman who recognized him. Herb was suggesting that she was a busy body who should have minded her own business. It lit up the phones pretty fast.
