In the Urbana Champaign Illinois area, a new “local” talk outlet has opened. I’m not saying it’s gonna fail, but…. The owner is simulcasting their schedule on two stations – WJEK-FM (1900 watt Class A) and WSJK-FM (9 kW Class A) [In FM stations, A is the smallest/weakest type of station]
So after running ESPN all night, they carry two hours of Wall Street this morning, followed by 11 hours of local talk, and then back to ESPN for the rest of the evening. The local hosts are significantly on the young side (or very old publicity photos). The only one of the group that appears to have prior radio talk experience used to work for a 1 kW AM station in town.
Champaign Urbana is a college town – the combined population of the two cities just barely puts it into a measurable metropolitan area for census and marketing purposes. Let’s see if the station lasts longer than Air America.
