Rusty Humphries’ “ratings” are really falling here. Any theories why?

No theories from me. I never listen to him.
I like Rusty, but his program is hard to listen to when it sounds like it’s coming from a coffee can. Don’t know if it’s production or what, but the show sounds horrible on most stations.
My guess is he is doing the show from a studio in his house over an ISDN line. While that creates some useful possibilities (like Glenn Beck not having to drive into New York City every day), it does create some issues with production values and interaction with the other staff.
Rusty can be very interesting, however over the past few months he has turned Friday night’s into his “health show” — and his favorite guest for that is Suzanne Sommers (…puke…)
When Rusty sticks to news and issues he is very good, otherwise I find him unlistenable.
He does have the BEST fill in host of anyone I can think of when Orson Scott Card sits in. Card needs to get into radio or at least a podcast.
I’m with you. No matter if people want to admit it or not, people want the talk show host to be strong and direct (even if they’re wrong). When Rusty has Suzanne on, it’s clear his maleness is being stroked by Suzanne, and since Rusty’s wife died he’s very vulnerable to being manipulated by a woman – not that most men wouldn’t enjoy that :)…. but it leaves him sounding like a puddle of wimpy mush by the end.
Well, part of it may be the fact that TRN started using a whole-network approach with new stations, offering an entire lineup of their hosts. As such, Humphries has a few more outlets to play with over the air, meaning less of a need to go to the Internet to listen.
What’s always been bizarre to me is that TRN offers a premium subscription service and it never gets promoted on the air. Savage mentions his web site constantly, but I’ve never heard him mention the streaming option. I guess TRN isn’t giving him a percentage :)
