This means nothing to almost everybody, but since I just happened to stumble on it by accident…

History of Halo Burger
Halo Burger is a local hamburger chain around the Flint, Michigan area since 1923. Bill Thomas acquired the local Kewpee (Q.P.) burger outlet during World War Two when its original owner died. Flint was the headquarters of Buick and General Motors until it moved to Detroit in 1929. The iconic Halo burger was on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint, which is about a mile from the Buick Plant and headquarters on Hamilton Avenue (no longer there) and about a block from the building housing the Charles S Mott Foundation – one of the cornerstones of the Progressive movement.
Halo Burgers were wonderful – slathered in Hellman’s mayonnaise, cooked fresh, French Fries cooked in animal fat (This was in the middle 1980s). Bill Thomas died on Christmas Day 1973, but the company continued to bear his name as it was run by his son Terry.
Terry Thomas got religion in the 1990s after having health problems (or maybe pressure from the government) and things became low fat and “healthy” – but still miles better than the big chains.
His mom is now 93, and he’s been slinging burgers for fifty-seven years and has decided it is time to let go. The chain is being sold to a person who currently runs several Subway shops in the area – I doubt it will remain Halo Burger for much longer.
One more item on the list of things I’ll never do again…
That is what I tell my kids, you know you are growing up, because all the stuff you thought had been around forever slowly goes away, right before your eyes…….
I first had a Halo Burger in 1993 at the new location by Birch Run. In fact that is the only place I have had one (about 5 times or so). Still, I did like them (and the fact that they had Cherry Shakes and not Strawberry)…….
Let’s hope it can survive, even if the odds look grim…
Part of what didn’t help is they got the idea of starting a hot dog place right next door to their place across the street from the mall. Stick with what you know.
Art, at least have the courtesy to link back to the original when you steal someone’s material.

I never visited your web site. I included 3 links of the material where I read about this event. Most of what I wrote was from my own personal experience, as I lived in Flint for quite a while and Halo burger was a frequent topic on the local TV station.
If one of those three sources “stole” some factoid from your web site, your beef is with them, not me.
