Easy. They’re afraid of Jay’s ratings falling into the dump too quickly and already need a boost. They know Rush = viewers = $$$. Honestly I’d have waited for sweeps, but hey, there’s a reason NBC’s in 4th place.
I should have been more verbose. I understand why NBC wants Rush on. The Why part is why did Rush agree to it? One of his recurring themes is he refuses to do mainstream media because it always turns out to be a setup – and he comes back to radio and says “I can’t believe I did it again”… like Charlie Brown kicking the football and Lucy keeps fooling him.
A lot of people (including people in the business) don’t know that Rush did a syndicated TV show for 4 years late at night. Maybe he is testing the waters to see if anyone on TV is interested in trying again.
I’d say a lot of that is acting… he’s been known to do tongue-in-cheek stuff like that. As for why Rush is going on Leno, there is an old proverb that “any publicity is good publicity.” Part of him is embarrassed when he does that, but another part relishes it… how long did he milk the fact that Barbara Walters named him one of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008?
As for a revival of Rush’s TV show (which I proudly got up at 5:30 a.m. as an elementary-school kid to watch, by the way)… would any network be willing to pay the price Rush could command for such a show? It’s not out of the question… after all, Rush’s first show was launched off a guest appearance on the short-lived Pat Sajak Show (a competitor to Carson back in 1990).
From the news I see, apparently it went quite well. Apparently Rush had the audience on his side, and Jay’s points fell flat. Rush had fun running over Al Gore in an electric car.
(Doesn’t Jay have a very large collection of expensive cars – how did he get to be the poster child for electric cars?)
