Kiss that baby goodbye!

As you all know, America measures time by the passage of the sports seasons. Baseball spring training (and college baseball) is about to start.

The period of the year when talk stations actually have talk shows is about to end. Major League Baseball sells a streaming package, so they are aggressive about preventing radio stations from streaming radio onto the Internet – there are even a few radio stations owned by baseball teams that can’t stream their own games.

Back in the early days of radio, MLB had the same stance with radio and wouldn’t let radio broadcast the games. Radio announcers would watch the game from outside using binoculars and reading a ticker tape and create sound effects of the noise of the crowd and the ball hitting the bat.

Eventually baseball woke up that having the games on radio increased attendance and interest in baseball and let radio inside the fortress. Since these days pretty much every baseball game is sold out, baseball probably doesn’t need any free promotion.
