Rushing to war crime trials was a bad idea

I could have sworn I wrote this already – maybe it was on a web site.

Prime Minister of Italy Berlusconi is repeating almost word for word what I wrote down – maybe I trashed it as being too inflammatory…

Reuters coverage

War Crimes is what you do after you depose a dictator, not before. Like with Saddam Hussein, when you “try” a country’s leader and “convict” him of “war crimes”, all that does is raise the stakes making compromise or surrender not an option.

“Once someone put forward the idea of bringing Gaddafi before the International Criminal Court, I think the idea of staying in power became entrenched with him and I don’t think anyone can make him change his mind,” he told reporters.

The “someone” he is referring to is British Prime Minister David Cameron.   The implication is that Berlusconi (who is friends with Qadaffi) was the one negotiating a deal that would have had Quadhaffi step down and leave the country in exchange for not being prosecuted.
