Even if you are among those who like the idea of a no-fly zone, it would do nothing at this point.
The city of Brega is now under government control. From the reports I’m reading, there are tanks, artillery and Russian made Grad Multiple Rocket Launcher vehicles. Libya also has a Navy, which is bombarding the land from the sea.
The oil facility at Brega is empty. The last of the crude was shipped out 3 days ago and the government controls the pipelines. The Provisional Government has no oil left to sell. No oil = no money.
There is only one major city left to conquer before Benghazi – Ajdabiya. There is a bypass road that rounds past the city on the North side. It’s almost like someone planned for this contingency. It has a population of around 150,000 (before all the foreign workers fled) – from there it is 100 miles to the end-game, Benghazi. Once Benghazi loses electricity, the civilian population has some decisions to make.
So let’s say the UN / NATO / Arab League / EU / France bomb the hell out of the air strips and blow up or shoot down every airplane Libya has. Now what? That doesn’t change a thing on the ground. They still have the tanks, the MRLVs, the artillery, the troops and control of the oil fields, natural gas pipeline, the water supply and the fuel to generate electricity.
Are we/they prepared to start using air power to blow up the tanks and sink the navy? Even doing that – would it change the outcome? Are we ready for a war between Qadaffi and Egypt?
So, what does it matter as long the idiot savant in the White House can polish a few more apples for the entitlement crowd, divide the country along economic and racial group stress lines, squander its treasure, compromise its security and that Michelle has her snout stuffed into a truffle? Let Daffy Qadaffi alone or he might be late for his lambada lessons, for corn’s sake.
