Tom Taylor’s newsletter points out that the “NPR” ban will also hit PRI and American Public Media. If you had read my first post on the subject, I described who the main sources of programming content are to Public Radio.
Here is the actual text of the Resolution (H.R. 1076)
It casts a much wider net than just NPR. It prohibits Federal Funding to be used by any nonprofit educational radio station to use those funds to buy radio programming from any source, and pretty clearly points out the BBC programming. It not only applies to radio, but also internet streaming.
There are two enumerated exceptions that are still allowed to get Federal money and use it to acquire programming content:
Broadcasting Board of Governors – which operates Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and Radio Marti
Defense Media Activity – the propoganda / domestic psyops arm of the Department of Defense – the part you are most familiar with is Armed Forces Radio
It’s very unlikely to make it past the Senate, but there it is.
By the way, the BBC World Service recently lost its funding from the Foreign Office. Not to worry, the U.S. State Department will pick up the costs now.
