Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead… just finished my first audiobook downloaded to the iPhone from my local library. While a lot has changed since the 1930s when the book was written, human nature hasn’t. She warned of what could happen to the United States, and here we are.
I was intending to read Atlas Shrugged (51 hours), but it looks like the book has been removed from the service that does the downloading. I think I read that hard copies of the book are selling like hotcakes at the moment.
Audiobooks are wonderful We listened last weekend to We Were Young Once, and Soldiers, by Hal Moore on the first battle in Vietnam between American GIs and North Vietnamese regulars (not Viet Cong.) I’ll never learn to put audiobooks on a cell phone (really, never) but I did learn how to download them onto the computer and listen that way (with an FM transmitter from C. Crane hooked up to the computer speakers so I could listen on all the radios throughout the house.) It’s a cheap and easy system to set up and enjoy when you’re home (and not going out anywhere.) Anybody else have any suggestions for good audiobooks?
Atlas Shrugged is a fascinating story given the current state of the nation. I recommend the audio version over print. Slogging through 1200 pages is just overwhelming! Rand had some brilliant insights but her career would have been greatly enhanced by an editor with a good pair of scissors (IMHO).
I’m not much of a fiction reader, but, Atlas Shrugs – as difficult as it is to read…the first 200 pages are a little slow, but it becomes a page turner, it’s vastly important literature.
Neat to see that The Fountainhead comes up as I am reading it now. Picked up a somewhat shopworn first ed. hardback with DJ a few months ago…struggling to figure out what is going on between Roark and the daughter with her killing him in print and loving him at night…
Ur…Atlas Shrugged.
Typo!
