The new station is called WCRW-AM (Conservative Radio
Washington?). The station is an upgrade to the former WAGE-AM on Leesburg, Virginia. The revamp has been tied up in legal knots by local land use bullies, who are trying to make approval of the station tower upgrade contingent on the land use board deciding what programming they want on the radio station, which far exceeds their legal authority.
The top billing station in the country is WTOP-AM in Washington DC – currently owned by the LDS Bonneville broadcasting in the process of being sold. The gentrification of DC has progressed to the point that DC is no longer a majority black city. Timing is everything.
WTOP moved to FM in 2006 – 103.5 in DC, 103.9 in the adjacent Frederick MD market, 107.7 in Manassas VA and a 104.3 translator in Leesburg, VA. It’s this transition to FM from 1500AM that set the stage to put the station over the top billing-wise. WTOP’s old 1500AM signal blankets the east coast at night, but has trouble covering the DC market and its ever-expanding suburbs. The FM stations cover most of the region with a clean reliable FM signal.
