NY Times “news” – Drunks in Anchorage …

NY Times “news” – Drunks in Anchorage (sure that’s not related to Sarah Palin), gay getting groin operation, Warren Buffet’s son and his misguided idea of philanthropy, and Paris fashions… I don’t get how they could be losing money and readership…

I was a reporter for 12 years for big dailies here in the Philly area and I JUST DON’T GET IT. (Even have an old friend from the salad days who went to the NYT many years ago. Haven’t talked to him in a long time.) Why can’t the people in the newsrooms see that they are putting themselves out to pasture? (With absolutely no prospects of ever getting another job with comparable pay and benefits.) See the same stupidity and lack of editorial smarts right here in Philly every week at the two now-bankrupt ex-Knight-Ridder papers (currently locally-owned with much squabbling in bankruptcy court because the local owners are trying to keep control.) Last week Spruce Springsteen played a concert here in Philly and the next day the Inquirer devoted TWO AND A HALF PAGES to the event — one-half of page one of the lead feature page and two full pages (with photos) inside. At some point, will the self-preservation instinct kick in and the journalists begin to l get real about who reads the paper and what content they want? Beats me. Sure haven’t seen it yet. (By the way, on the same day as the Springsteen coverage the Inky ran a big feature on the marketing opportunities with tweens — 8 to 12 year old girls with allegedly big money to spend on a bunch of silly junk. Even sent a reporter up to NYC to cover a tween convention/expo/whatever. For this I buy the paper?)

I’m gonna stick my neck out and guess that…. the reason is us…. the collective “we”.

In the good old days, newspaper put together papers and decisions about what people read or didn’t read was pretty hard to figure out. Then the tabloid magazines refined the process with impulse point of sale – and found that covers of Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis or UFOs make the magazines fly off the shelf.

Now we have this wonderful thing called the Internet – which can measure in excrutiating detail what people read and for how long (before they move on to the next story). What people say they want to read and what they do read are very different things (just as PPM found out with radio listening).

Let’s see what’s on the NY Times web site for today:
      – Yankees going to World Series…. who could have guessed that?
      – Bombings in Iraq [I thought that war was over]
      – Too big to fail financial institutions
      – More families with financial problems = more runaway kids
(video feature at the bottom – it mentions prostitution – go figure)
      – Chidren in China must salute passing cars
      – Swine flu and vaccine shortage
      – Bernie Madoff’s partner found dead in his swimming pool

Still have the drunks in Anchorage story up…. Did the NY Times cover that Sarah Palin’s husband quit his job? Every other Obamedia source seemed to think that was news. Do we even know what Joe Biden’s wife does for a living?
