Are silent AM stations not telling the FCC? This is a question I’ve pondered several times, and this morning I found this discussion over on radio-info.com from 2008. It’s regarding a daytime only AM station in Alabama – the point is not this station, but one person says that there are a number of AM stations in Mississippi that have turned off the transmitter and just not told the FCC. The FCC compliance officers react to complaints – if nobody complains that their AM station isn’t operating, the FCC has no motivation to do anything. One would hope that even if the AM station is dark, that they are still checking the transmitter to make sure the blinking red lights are still working at night.
