Radio One says “No” to moving to the hood… Radio One is the largest radio owner targeted at African Americans, and its roots are at WOL-AM in Washington, DC. Radio One had planned to move its headquarters from suburban Lanham Maryland to the Shaw district of D.C. (at 7th and S Street), lured by money from the district to revitalize the neighborhood. The new complex was supposed to be completed by 2009, but construction has not yet started (Google Maps shows a vacant lot)… The site is currently an old Wonder Bread factory building – the $144 million project was going to create residential housing and a mixed use office / shopping complex.
Radio One has decided with their financial condition and the availability of cheap suburban office space, they’ll stay out of the District and its problems.
