We opened the last week of May 2009, until this week 90% of out job applicants (respondents to ads) have been women. That is completely reversed…. we are north of the Charlotte area. Now guys 20 – 35. Hows the hopey-changey flimflam working for ‘ya?

Speaking of flim-flams – how’s that H1N1 flu thingy working out?

Poking around for stats today (since the News Media long ago lost interest)…. there has been virtually no cases of flu since mid December. Of people showing up at emergency rooms saying “OMG – I think I have the flu!”, only 4.4% of them actually tested positive for the flu. The biggest week peaked in the U.S. at about 200 deaths – the total is something around 3600. The world wide total confirmed death count was a little over 14,000. In a typical year, about 36,000 people die of the flu in the United States.

The H1N1 flu is highly infectious – it is easy to transmit person to person. It is also very weak except in people who are immunocompromised (HIV/AIDS, transplant patients, children who have never had the flu)… So the H1N1 crowded out the normal more virulent seasonal flu and (as predicted) deaths from the flu were signficantly LESS than a normal year.

What an amazing vaccine program that was!

More to your point :) The recession and the tinkering with the economy has depressed traditionally male occupations – truck driver, construction, manufacturing and adding jobs to education and health care, largely female occupations. The jobs “lost” since 2008 have largely been men with less than college education requireements. Relationships where the woman works while the husband is at home feeling helpless tend to break up. Having several million unemployed bitter men sitting around is very dangerous – but maybe that’s the objective. Get a few more pot smoking nut cases shooting at the Pentagon and no telling what the government will say it needs to do to protect us.

That, and diversity hires are more prevalent than ever. Women are getting preferential treatment in a lot of sectors. I’ve been trying to break into the entry level meteorologist field for nearly two years now. I’ve been passed up at least three times (and there aren’t that many entry-level positions available) in favor of young blonde women with no meteorology credentials. Then, to top it off, they lie on their EEOs, change titles of open and advertised positions, back-date the hirings to make it impossible to file a complaint with the EEOC, you name it. It’s ridiculous.

Can you really consider the Fox News-style tactic of putting good looking women in every spot the same as diversity hires, though? Sounds like a smart business model to me…

As others have pointed out, the “powers that be” in the country’s university systems are using preferences to create gender imbalances – latest number I heard was 56% of college students are women. The steep rise in tuition is a “list price” – diversity students get a deep discount. Yet more trouble down the road from unattached angry young men locked out of the system and not forming families and raising children.

Dennis Miller (on replay) just said “I view it [unemployment] as a right. it’s something we’ve paid into over the years”.

Employees pay *nothing* into the unemployment insurance fund. ZIp. Nada. FICA is not unemployment, it’s social security retirement.
