What bandwidth costs… just got an email from one of my ISP contacts offering bandwidth for $4 per Mb/month. A few years ago, $100/Mb was more typical. Streaming doesn’t need “burstable” bandwidth – it’s a constant steady stream. For someone streaming at 56kb/sec, that’s about 16 streams per Mb/sec…. meaning it costs about $.25 per month for each listener, or a penny a day. The big guys probably can negotiate a much better price. The streaming serivce is providing other things like monitoring, the hardware, the player software, analytics…. and stations have the music royalties to pay…. but that should give you a general sense of how little the actual bandwidth is today for internet streaming
