WSJ updates the situation in Nigeria – i…

WSJ updates the situation in Nigeria – if you haven’t followed it, theirPresident vanished for over two months, supposedly getting medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. A civil war started breaking out between the Islamic North and ChrIstian South with nobody telling the military what to do. Reluctantly the civilian government declared him not able to carry out the job and replaced him with an acting president. Nigeria has high quality crude oil that makes them the 4th largest source of oil for the US

With that background, today’s news is that a new cabinet has been appointed – including a managing director from Goldman Sachs in London. Is there any government Goldman doesn’t control?

The only missing piece of the puzzle is we need information connecting Goldman with Woodrow Wilson. My sense is it won’t take 30 seconds to find it.

I’m starting to get Glenn Beck’s feeling about history. So much info is now online… (not crackpot stuff.. material from the time you would have only been able to research in a major library…

Henry Goldman, the son of the Namesake of Goldman quit the firm in 1917 because he felt the firm wasn’t doing enough to help Germany… Once in a while Rush will bring up that Joe Kennedy (father of JFK, Teddy and RFK) opposed any sanctions against Germany in 1938 when he was serving as Ambassador to England.

So much of what you learned in history in public school was lies – but the truth is the people who teach that history would not care if they found out. Truth is anything that advances Progress to the Ultimate form of society.

Here you go from Financial World, Volume 19 – August 31, 1912, page 17…. (interestingly, Google scanned the newsletter from the collection at Princeton University’s library)

WILSON WELL LIKED IN WALL STREET.

Every day concrete evidence accumulates to prove that Wall street’s preference in the three-ring Presidential circus is Gov. Woodrow Wilson. Jacob H. Schiff, head of the powerful international banking house of Kuhn, Loeb & Co., has come out strongly in an endorsement of the New Jersey Governor, and no doubt Mr. Schiff’s support will bring to the Democratic candidate many votes from the Hebrews who look upon the leading Jewish banker of the United States as a sage counsellor whose advice they prize highly.

Still another banker who has announced his allegiance to Gov. Wilson is Samuel Goldman, the head of the banking house ,of Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Goldman journeyed in person to the Democratic shrine at Sea Girt to tell the candidate of his strong preference for him.

As it was Mr. Goldman’s firm which has financed Woolworth & Co., Studebaker & Co., Goodrich & Co., and other industrial corporations, into whose common stocks a vast amount of water has been injected, we presume its head, in abandoning the Republican party and joining the Democratic party, believes it to be the party of the people and in favor of water.

We know Gov. Wilson strongly believes in the personal use of water, as he is a total abstainer, but we wonder if he is as strongly minded in favor of its liberal use for capitalizing purposes.

On an unrelated, but fascinating note to me – this is right at the heyday of when streetcar and interurban railways were floating bonds on Wall Street to fund their construction and expansion…. probably 1/3 of all the ads are railroad or streetcar related….

        On total sensory overload now…..

Glenn Beck has mentioned tentatively a few times that “Prohibition” was a creation of the Progressive Movement. You can see from the comments above that they are poking at Woodrow Wilson for not drinking. Prohibition was passed as a Constitutional Amendment in 1918, during the 2nd term of Woodrow Wilson. Prohibition would lay the foundation for the Mob in Chicago and Joe Kennedy making his fortune smuggling in booze through Canada.

Just to create more confusion, here is information about the topic from a biography of Wilson

          Connecting a couple other dots….

In the early 1900s, when National Prohibition was being proposed, one of the key problems was that it created a huge funding problem. The income tax (backed by a Constitutional Amendment) didn’t exist until 1913. $217 million of the $451 million Federal Budget in 1915 came from taxes on Alcohol. Another $78 million from Tobacco. The brand new 2% income tax on corporations and “rich” people raised only $80 million.

In order to pass Prohibition, the Federal Government needed another source of revenue to replace the Excise taxes (which are what the founders intended to be the main revenue source for the Federal Government)….

Here is the breakdown of Federal Government revenue for 1915
