New York Times is selling WQXR, its classical FM radio station in New York City. It’s a complex deal, but the ultimate buyer is Univision. The fact that NY Times is largely controlled by a Mexican billionaire is completely unrelated, I’m sure.

WCAA (the Univsion station) will get the higher 6,000 watt power license for WXQR, and sell its 600 watt license (and the WQXR call sign) to non-commercial WNYC to operate as a second FM station, and move some of its classical programming to the new station. The existing employees will be released, and WNYC is starting fund raising to pay for this. The deal so far doesn’t mention the fate of the 2 FM repeaters. The transmitter for both stations are located on the top of the Empire State Building
