Remember the Palm Pilot? The device that was all the rage about 10 years ago, when the Blackberry was the new kid on the block and the iThis and iThat didn’t exist yet? HP announced today that it is acquiring Palm to join a long list of computer brands that have faded into memory (Compaq, DEC, Tandem, Apollo….) I don’t see HP creating any kind of real competitor to the iPhone/Pad or the Blackberry…..

The PalmPilot paved the way for PDAs and smartphones as we know them. I’ve used a few devices in my time, but I’ll always be fond of both the simplicity and the wide variety of apps on Palm devices.
I’m a Blackberry user through and through these days, but my BB will never reclaim the spot in my heart where my Palms once occupied. Needless to say, I was a bit sad to see them bought out by HP. Their new line of smartphones haven’t gained much traction recently, but they’ve shown a good bit of promise. I worry that a company like HP (who has little experience with consumer oriented smartphones) will run the name into the ground. Given the history of Palm, though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that happen at all. Too little, too late from Palm I suppose.
