Where did Glenn Beck “go”?

Today [August 12,  2010] Glenn told us we have to choose.  Either you believe that the U.S. is based on Deuteronomy and the Law of Moses or you are an enemy of God and the United States.

When any group or person says “You’re with me or you’re against me”, I’m against you.   Glenn is now way over the line in turning his program into a religious preaching forum.

You can now find his program under the category Religion.

Not to sound trite, but “Amen”. Mr. OverTheTop seems to have a need to constantly redefine “Over the top”. Perhaps he is experiencing an addictive response – if a little something is good, more must be better.

    • Art Stone says:

      That’s very insightful.

When I was a kid (late 1960s), I worked one summer at a restaurant in a summer resort area. The people who worked there dreaded the week when the AA convention would be in town each year. Almost without exception, the AA people were chain smokers, and the dining room would fill up with smoke. They were generally very nice people, but problematic. Addictive personalities tend to just substitute one addiction for another.

  2. DevilsAdvocate says:

The part that disappoints me the most is that the more over the top his ideas become, the more easily it will be for his opponents to marginalize his every idea. I see the same sort of behavior from time to time with other conservative radio personalities or media outlets. For people who so strongly support their cause, they seem to fail to realize this fact.

I have nothing for our administration. I want them gone and replaced with someone who’s less corrupt. I feel I’ve had my eyes opened over the past couple years while listening to my fair share of conservative talk radio, but I cringe every time I hear something like this because I know the damage they bring to this cause.

Glenn, if by some odd chance you read this: KNOCK IT OFF, or everything you claim to have been working for will be for naught.

  3. Hesperus says:

I’ve been growing nervous, bit by bit, as Beck paints more and more religious undertones into his usually enjoyable and insightful work. I fear that he will cross the line and FOX sooner or later will step in as ratings head south. As far as being against a person who says “with me or against me” in a struggle of one kind or another goes, I’d urge caution before being a logic-table decision-maker. Sometimes, that choice is unavoidable. Choose the right.

    • DevilsAdvocate says:

I understand the religious undertones to a degree. I don’t resemble a religious person in any way, but I’ve come to the idea that many of the societal problems we see today have come about due to religion being cast aside. Glenn believes the same thing, as do a number of the other big names in conservative talk radio. The difference between Glenn and I is that if I believed I was on a mission from God, I wouldn’t announce it for fear of being immediately discounted. I admire his ability to do that, but that doesn’t mean it’s the most productive approach.

That aside, I worry that Glenn’s “with me or against me” attitude will polarize his own listeners, which will likely weaken some of the conservative causes. We need unity.

  4. obbop says:

Ceased listening to the Beck unit awhile back due to excessive inanity, general weirdness, irrationality and an obvious, in my opinionated opinion, that his actual knowledge base that comes with education, either self-education via large dollops of non-fiction reading or from other varied sources.

I detected ample evidence that the Beck unit assuredly has some sort of “addictive-type personality” mind-set and whose opinionating is based upon attaining ratings as a money-making scheme/scam with NO foundation in actualy assisting the USA as a whole in any way.

I ascertained at least a couple decades ago that MANY problems within the USA is likely based upon some form of class war.

My opinion was reiterated a couple years ago by a mind much better than mine:

“There’s class warfare, all right, Mr. (Warren) Buffett said, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”

Very few of the profit-seeking commentators, radio talk show hosts, TV-based pundits, etc. mention class war though I am convinced of its reality.

Mike Savage is one of the few mentioning class war but he limits its mention, likely due to the thought of class war going against the entrenched indoctrination embedded within so many USA citizens and the negative connotations and emotions aroused within the typical human confronted with a thought or idea that “goes against their grain.”

I remain the humble Obbop, Disgruntled Old Coot extrordinaire.
Star of neither stage nor screen; still shanty-bound atop the hillbilly haven of the Ozark Plateau.

    • bobgza says:

Would you rather have a government which promises to take care of your every need; or would you prefer a small government where each person is responsible for his choices?

  5. politicojim says:

So all you sorry ass swimmers gonna practice the survival float when he asks you to build a boat? Just the fact that one human looks to another and advises them to build a boat is civilization in my book. God bless ya, Glenn.

  6. Art Stone says:

Is that the same Michael Savage that said Thursday night “it’s none of your damn business what I do with my money”?

  7. MikeBeaver003 says:

Would you consider your money to be a financial tool or a religious item Mr Stone? After all, it says “In God We Trust” on it. Just because Glenn points to God as part of the solution to the country’s political problems, doesn’t alter the fact that he is primarily talking about politics. If his references to God offend you so much, perhaps you should take all your money that’s stained with God’s name and burn it.

    • Art Stone says:

That same money says “federal reserve note” and it’s Glenn who says you can’t trust the money and you need to buy gold. You’ve built your argument on a foundation of sand, and you know what God says about that.

    • Art Stone says:

“In God we Trust” was not the U.S. Motto until the Cold War was underway and Congress decided to create it in 1956 to help find all those Commies. I do not consider money a religious item, and neither did any of the country’s founders. I’m not a politician, and you’re not a historian.

      • imanage4u says:

Congress passed the Act of April 22, 1864. This legislation changed the composition of the one-cent coin and authorized the minting of the two-cent coin. The Mint Director was directed to develop the designs for these coins for final approval of the Secretary. IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the 1864 two-cent coin.

The first paper currency bearing the motto entered circulation on October 1, 1957.; however, I find no documentation saying that “it was used to find those Commies” as Art Stone suggest.

Keep bloggin and spreading those lies Art – maybe one day you’ll be famous…like Glenn!

        • Art Stone says:

Do you really think I don’t know that is a copy/paste from Wikipedia?

        • Art Stone says:

If you “found no documentation”, it’s because you have your eyes closed and didn’t look.

Try this one – it took about 15 seconds to find:
          http://www.slate.com/id/2067499

Hand in hand with the Red Scare, to which it was inextricably linked, the new religiosity overran Washington. Politicians outbid one another to prove their piety. President Eisenhower inaugurated that Washington staple: the prayer breakfast. Congress created a prayer room in the Capitol. In 1955, with Ike’s support, Congress added the words “In God We Trust” on all paper money. In 1956 it made the same four words the nation’s official motto, replacing “E Pluribus Unum.” Legislators introduced Constitutional amendments to state that Americans obeyed “the authority and law of Jesus Christ.”

But mostly I know about it because I was alive then, and have listened to people making this argument on talk radio for the last 30 years

  8. ougrad says:

Actually Art, I think you are one in the quicksand here.

    • Art Stone says:

Actually, I think this entire thread is proving that my decision was correct.

      • donabel says:

        Hmmmm….
Beck spends 99% of his time on politics and 1% of his time on religion, so you put him into the religion category. Interesting. It seems to me that you just got annoyed with Beck and decided to show your disapproval in this rather peculiar way. I’m disappointed that this sort of thing has crept into your otherwise very fine and useful site. I would respectfully suggest that you reverse your decision.

        • Art Stone says:

97.62% of all statistics are made up.

It took 4 minutes today before Glenn went into talking about God, faith and religion.

        • Robrrt says:

Glenn, Stu & Pat spend most of their air time making jokes. Perhaps the show should be placed in the
          Happy Talk category.

  9. MikeBeaver003 says:

Are you by any chance a politician Art, because the way you responded to my comment by not responding to what I said, and instead changing the subject was masterful political bafflegab! As you well know, my comment had nothing to do with money itself, but rather the fact that just as a mention of God on money does not change it into a religious relic, mentions of God on Glenn’s show do not change it from what it really is – a political program. If you’re going to be this intense about accuracy in show categorization, I would suggest placing all the liberal talk radio programs into one of 2 categories, either Fantasy, because they’re 99.9% lies or Hate Speech. And before you throw him back at me, yes, I would also place Michael Savage with them in the Hate Speech category.

    • Art Stone says:

Glenn was not just “mentioning God” – he is advocating subordinating the Constitution to the “Law of Moses” as stated in Deuteronomy – which among other things demands that God’s people hold slaves, polygamy, burning down the churches of other religions, kill their relatives if they try to convert them to another religion, and killing the women and children of enemies after they have been defeated.

Is that your vision for America? It’s not mine.

      • imanage4u says:

Once again, Art is trying to gain blogs by making crap up!

Have you even read the bible? Where does it say for “Gods people to hold slaves, polygamy, burning churches of other religions, killing relatives if they try to convert to another religion and to kill the women and children of enemies after they’re defeated”….? This is a profound misrepresentation of what the bible actually says or what point Glenn is actually trying to make when he references (key word) Moses or Deuteronomy in the OLD TESTAMENT.

        • Art Stone says:

Yes, I read Deuteronmy this week to make the Deuteronomy “poll”. It’s very clear what it says

          http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+1&version=NIV

5: 21 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” .
          [Note that servants are “property”]

`13: 6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death.

13: 12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in 13 that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, [a] both its people and its livestock. 16 Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt.
          [All its people includes everyone]

14:21 Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to an alien living in any of your towns, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner.

15: 16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his ear lobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your maidservant.

17:8 If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge—whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults—take them to the place the LORD your God will choose. 9 Go to the priests, who are Levites, and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict

20: 10 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. 11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.
          [slavery?]

21: 15 If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,

          …

      • bobgza says:

I didn’t hear Glenn talk about “demanding that we ‘hold slaves’, ‘practice polygamy’, etc.
What date was that stuff detailed?

        • Art Stone says:

My post said “today” and was dated August 12th. That’s the date he asserted that the United States is based on the Law of Moses as stated in Deuteronomy AND it is time to choose sides – that if you don’t believe that, you must not understand America.

I then listed things that God told Moses are hislaws as stated in Deuteronomy for those who have never read it.

      • queeniezee says:

It’s obvious you’re just a casual listener. What Beck has been saying is that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are founded on the principles of Natural Law. Like the Law of Moses, the founding documents are a compact with God, who has created us, and endowed with “certain inalienable rights.” When we as a country turn from God and His law , and turn to governments to supply us with these rights, that’s when things fall apart. Furthermore, our founding documents are totally incompatible with Sharia law.

These have been Beck’s main themes during his monologues concerning the founding documents’ Judeo-Christian origin.

  10. briand75 says:

Wowsa! Let’s recreate the entire liberal deconstruction of classic christianity. These are the same near-invective talking points that the “Professional Left” uses to trash believers and near-believers. A shame when we begin to lose credibility and the left hasn’t fired a shot.

God works in mysterious ways. His presence was classified by civilizations before us as “religious” and we have survived as such for thousands of years. The moral may be “lighten up”. Mr. Stone has a very astute eye for humor. Moving Mr. Beck to “Religion” has touches of irony in it. I find no fault with Mr. Stone or his wry humor.

  11. 3tooz says:

I can sum this all up in one sentence IN GOD WE TRUST All others pay cash !!!

    • Art Stone says:

Though the “In God We Trust” law was passed in 1956, the actual Federal Reserve Notes didn’t appear until 1964, when the paper money was no longer backed by silver. It’s almost like the Powers That Be figured if they printed the word “God” on the money, people would not realize it was now totally paper money and they were being duped.

One of the theories about the murder of JFK was he issued an executive order to return the power to print money to the U.S. Treasury and take that power away from the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Not saying it is true, just saying it’s out there.

  12. Hesperus says:

Haw haw haw! Incidentally, isn’t Deuteronomy one of the scriptures comprising what Christians call the Old Testament, which, according to them, was fulfilled and superseded by the New Testament?

    • Art Stone says:

That’s kind of my understanding. When I’ve tried to get an explanation in the past about how much of what the Old Testament applies to Christians, what I’ve been told is “Jesus created the New Covenant”, which replaces the Old Testament law.

Jesus endorsed the 10 commandments of Moses, but things like (and especially) circumcision of male children are not part of the New Covenant. So a Christian minister who preaches that you must obey things in the Old Testament is deliberately misreading the teachings of Jesus. Deuteronomy is pretty mild compared to Leviticus. The Old Testament instructs people to be stoned to death – Jesus said “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”

The New Covenant was the way that Jesus incorporated non-Jews (Gentiles) into his religion and bring them under God’s law. Part of the controversy turned up in the Dead Sea Scrolls was it points to an intense rift between colonies of early Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians.

Glenn Beck knows the ADL and SPLC are just waiting to pounce on him if he says anything that sounds like “The United States is a Christian Nation”, so this whole “Law of Moses” approach is to try to walk the middle path.

Our friend apparently assumes that I didn’t spend my youth in Sunday School, singing in the Church Choir, went to Christian summer camp and attended a Christian College. The difference seems to be that I listened.

  13. harrismk says:

I am not religious, but am beginning to get there. It is obvious that you are not tying history into your determinations. It is obvious that the writings had to do with the circumstances at the time.

First, because of the severe class system, indentured servants were a class above the normal class of people. They had a roof over their heads, they had food, they were taken care of, not like the normal class. They had the freedom to leave once their commitment was met. They agreed to a contract for a period of time to take care of their employers to pay off their debt. That existed in our country for many people that wanted to live here and wanted to have a way to live here. Is there a problem with working for your room and board, and the transportation you wouldn’t have afforded otherwise?

If you want to really look at history, slavery was the economy of the South, the immediate abolition of slavery destroyed businesses and created tremendous hardships for the slaves. Imagine had the abolition been a ten or twenty year plan to change the dynamic to allow the change in the economic model and the slaves were able to work into an income producing job. Instead, we forced them out of their jobs, their homes, and any means to take care of their families because the proclamation demanded an immediate abolition. Just imagine, such a mechanism could have averted the civil war. Look at what Obama is doing…another civil war?

That is my word on that section, and will likely comment on more. However, please realize that then, as now in the middle east, people lived in tribes, with various beliefs for which they had no tolerance for a belief outside theirs. This created wars between the tribes. I am only glad they did not have car bombs and grenade launchers, and I hope you don’t either.

  14. harrismk says:

Glenn Beck is doing political commentary and, at times, makes reference to very specific biblical references. Your branding him as a religious zealot, and expanding his words is terribly wrong. He believes strongly in God. Just because you don’t, doesn’t mean you should alienate the rest of us by making it so we can’t find his radio shows. I am sure he would love to take your phone call to state your viewpoints.

    • Art Stone says:

Try the Show Search and type “Beck”. Wow, that was tough.

Or set show type to All.

    • queeniezee says:

I agree. As a daily listener to Glenn’s radio show, I’ve been carefully listening to his spiritual thematic developments. And that’s what they are, namely, thematic developments.

Some of Glenn’s main points have been that our founding documents have a Judeo-Christian origin, and it’s time for each one of us to turn back to God because our country is on the brink of a great chastisement. He’s right, but Art wants to fool around rather than cooperate. Oh, well.

      • Art Stone says:

        I’m not fooling around.

        • Ad rem says:

People….don’t fool around with this guys site. Go over to “TalkStreamLive.com” and find all the Beck you want!

          • Art Stone says:

That’s an excellent idea, although I strongly prefer Radiotime. People who have read this blog for more than two days know I’ve strongly encouraged people bookmark program and station web sites now because one day in the not so distant future you’re likely to get a “server not found” error coming here.

  15. WesternMA says:

While the media is busy tripping over it’s feet trying to explain the Beck rally, the AFL-CIO has now decided to hold its own rally at the mall on October 2nd.

Imitation the sincerest form of flattery………………..or something else?

  16. Art Stone says:

Something else. This was announced on August 7th
    http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/08/07/18655586.php

I had a friend who lived at Dupont Circle about 30 years ago – people holding marches and rallies are so constant that the locals don’t even pay attention to them.

    • ICCDude says:

Beck’s rally was in the works for a long time before the unions jumped on board on Aug. 7th. As the media started reporting the growing momentum of Beck’s really the Drive By Media (DBM) was trying to downplay the magnitude of the event.
Are you really suggesting that the unions weren’t trying to answer in kind with their own rally?

  17. JayMar says:

I used to love listening to Glenn Beck, but suddenly instead of political commentary he starting preaching the “gospel” without consideration for those of us who do not believe the same way he does. I finally had to tune him out. Michael Savage used to be my favorite but he is full of bile calling the other talk radio hosts inflammatory names. Later when both CAIR and the UK turned against him he complained that none of the other fellow hosts came to his assistance, I wonder why. Dr. Savage has turned into an absurd drivel salesman. Mark Levin is in the same boat as Savage. Hannity and Rush toe the party line. So I am now looking into local hosts such as Joe Pags in Texas, Herman Cain from Georgia, and Jim Quinn from Penn.
