The end of Book Stores as we know them?

NY Times has an interesting article about the impending closure of the Barnes and Noble bookstore across the street from Lincoln Center.   They talk to a lawyer who goes in to read books for free, and a woman who goes in to sit around and read magazines without buying them…  (Welcome to the Upper West Side of Manhattan!)    The general premise of the story is that brick and mortar book stores in general are in trouble due to price competition from Amazon.

Thirty bucks now for a hardback … wonder if that could have something to do with anything? Recently, I cleaned out my library and donated 300 hardbacks to a local charity. Three hundred times thirty — Oh my goodness! — Nine grand! I’ve dusted off my old classics collection, printed circa 1920, and am starting with the collected works of Guy de Maupassant, four inches thick. I’ve about fifty more volumes to go.

Oh yes, and in a capitalist society, businesses that can’t compete should fail. You know, like the libs favorite — survival of the fittest. Literary Darwinism.
