8/28 death in D.C.

Very intriguing…

Eric Wright, the son of KSL’s Doug Wright, fell from top of a 7 story building at about 2 am (or at least that’s when he was found).  The building houses the interns participating in the Hinckley Institute of Politics, which is run by the University of Utah.

If the name Robert H Hinckley sounds slightly familiar,  Mr. Hinckley teamed up with Henry Noble (the founder of ABC Radio) to start the ABC Television network in 1946.   He and Mr Noble both did work for FDR and were friends.   Mr Hinckley was a Mormon in Utah and had been the regional head of the WPA in the 1930s.  He was a supporter of FDR’s New Deal.

He was appointed in 1938 to head the Civil Aeronautics Authority which built National Airport in D.C. and launched a program to train civilian pilots (which would be very useful a few years later after Pearl Harbor).  During the war, Mr. Hinckley joined Sperry Corporation, which was involved in the earliest computer controlled sights for dropping bombs from airplanes, radar systems and radio signal tracking devices – all critical for the war effort.   Sperry Rand (later Sperry Univac and then Unisys) is and continues to be a major supplier of computer systems to the U.S.  government.
