This is one odd story on a lot of levels.
Danger and Excitement Intersect at Figure Eight Racing
This story (and the related video) is from Indianapolis describing the sport of “Figure 8 racing”, which is a more civilized variant of the staple of the County Fair called “Demolition Derby”. It’s a race where the cars cross each other at a 90 degree angle. The challenge is to avoid crashing into someone at the cross over. Whoever completes the most laps in 3 hours wins.
Out in Tulsa, I saw a slightly more reasonable variant of this – rather than being a 90 degree crossover, it was two side by side circles – you had to change lanes and go back and forth between the two loops. That sounds a lot simpler, but when 10 or twelve cars are doing it at the same time, it’s a little harder than it sounds.
Here is advanced figure out racing:
But what the heck do people in New York care about this? The story does have a connection in that one of the drivers is from Islip out on Long Island. Is the Times noticing that New York has more than just Manhattan and the Hamptons?
