Dr Laura is gone to satellite, Dr Edell is gone, Michael Savage’s contract with TRN is in dispute, Bob Brinker is down to 3 hrs/week, Howard Stern is staying on Sirius/XM for 5 more years, Mike Smerconish is dropping his morning syndication, Mancow is semi-moving to Dial Global.
So who is left standing in 2011 and what is the future of talk radio? The talk radio business is further concentrating in Clear Channel’s Premiere. Fewer and fewer hours of talk radio are hosted by local hosts.
Let’s see where we are ending 2010 based on number of streaming affiliates (ignoring weekend shows, news-only programs, NPR, and sports – simulcasts are only counted once).
About 1/2 of the non-sports talk radio stations in the United Stations stream their syndicated programs – most of those that don’t are in very small markets. The big rocket shooting upwards is Dave Ramsey – not suprising given the state of the economy.
