David Stein’s odyssey

Writing about David Stein was on my “todo” list – something like “This is the strangest sports show I’ve ever heard”.   David Stein is heard on the Sporting News radio network in the middle of the night.

Not being a sports fan, the way I’ve sort of split the networks – ESPN is the network for the intense sports fan who is thinking about sports from the moment they wake up, watching 6 TVs at the same time in their basement until they fall asleep.  Fox Sports is for the person who enjoys getting together with other people with sports as the excuse, and Sporting News is the network for the person who follows sports because they like to gamble money.

David Stein’s show – at least since I starting paying more attention to sports – is kind of a male version of a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Joy Browne, on a sports network in the middle of the night.   Most of his time is spent moralizing and helping his listeners be a better type of person, often referring to sports figures as examples of what not to do.   Very odd for a sports network show.

Today’s Tom Taylor newsletter mentions he is leaving Sporting News and changing his program format with a new syndicator (doing exactly what he has already been doing – I guess Tom doesn’t listen to sports talk at 3AM)…   So all you news/talk program directors looking for an alternative to Coast to Coast, there ya go!
