Interesting to me is the spike at the “first hour” of each 3 hour block starting at 9 am (Beck?) then noon (Rush), 3 pm (Hannity?), 6 pm (Savage?) and 9 pm (?).
I wonder if folks tune in to hear the first part of their particular favorite host but then slowly drop off over the next two hours.
I don’t have a method to measure duration. I’m moderately sure some of that is people using recording software set to start recording….
But when a host has announced in advance they will have a guest host or a “best of” show, the counts typically drop about 40%, so most of it is humans making a decision. Mondays are always the biggest day, and much of this listening is done by people at work… a lot of them government workers, curiously.
Is you X axis in absolute numbers or representative of 10’s, 100’s, or 1,000’s? Simply, if only 1400 persons were listening at one time, the site couldn’t stay active, or am I wrong. Thanks.
The numbers are the absolute number of people that used this web site on 2/16/2011 to start the player for a station.
Many people bookmark the station(s) carrying their favorite program and don’t return until they want something else. During the weekdays, about 10-20k people a day use the web site. About 1/3 of that number are people who have never been here before.
There is only one criteria for whether the web site stays active – my willingness to pay the bills. This is not a business, which business people can find disorienting. There is no EBITDA.
Obviously, my typing needs to improve.

Art,
I tell everyone who finds me listening to a streamed radio station about streamingradioguide.
Isn’t it possible, with your documented utilization, to find advertisers for a scrolling banner on your site? Or offer a link page to send folks to paying affiliates? To ask for contributors with an email link to a paypal account? People get it, nothing’s free…
I hate to see you produce such a valuable resource without covering your costs and making a few bucks.
If you are not hearing it, thankyou very much for creating this place on the net.
Jack
Money always comes with strings.
Love your work. Used it for some time now. Wishing more people like you would step up and take some credit for real achievement. Never had a problem with your coding. You are the best.
Yah, hopefully enough strings to secure room, board, and web access. ;)
Jack
“strings” works something like this:
String holder: hey, here’s $5
Me: Thanks!
SH: hey, my brother is a lawyer and has a show on KXXX and you don’t have it listed
Me: it’s a local paid infomercial. I don’t list this.
SH: oh, I think you should reconsider your policy
Me: Nope
BMI/ASCAP: hey, we heard you made $5
Me: Go away
Radio Station Owner: hey, you’re a pirate! We hear someone gave you $5
Me: you don’t want to be listed? No problem
SH: I think your web site put a virus on my computer
Me: no it didn’t
SH: I don’t believe you
Me: nothing my web site does is capable of infecting your computer
SH: help me figure out how to get this rootkit off my computer
Me: reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows
SH: How do I do that?
Me: go to the book store and buy Windows for Dummies
SH: so you’re calling me stupid?
SoundExchange Lawyer: hey, those are really impressive stats
Me: this is a hobby, not a business. It has no revenue.
SEL: but SH gave you $5!
Me: I don’t do any streaming – I just list radio stations
SEL: We can let a judge decide
Me: so sue me
SH: I hate you. I want my $5 back
Me: no
SH to every bulletin board in the universe: SRG stole my money!!! They’re a thief and the guy who runs it has sex with sheep!!!
Me: You’re welcome
Google: We’ve reviewed your web site and see you have anti-Obama material on your web site. As you know from our terms of service, sites that promote racial hatred cannot host our adsense ads
Me: do you know the Racist picture of Barack Obama is the official White House photo?
Google: Yes, but we know hate speech when we see it
Me: whatever.
Google: you know we have every email you’ve sent or received for the last 5 years and every search request you’ve ever done, right?
Me: including the one about sex with sheep?
Google: of course. Our freedom fighting engineers in Egypt got a chuckle out of that one
Me: is this where I bend over?
Google: if you know what’s good for you. Would you like to reread our terms of service again?
Clear now? I knew every bit of that before I started this. It isn’t about the money.
It’s like you were channeling Rand. Great service Art. I already miss it. Sorry you had to deal with the parasites.
Art,
So long, and thanks for all the fish,
Jack
Thank you Art! I totally get your frustration. Thanks for the time we had using such a wonderful resource!
Art:
Don’t let a few left wing fascist stop you from providing this great resource.
We have to fight for our rights, or the left will in-slave our country through indoctrination and fear of law suits.
Rick
Sorry to burst your theory, but I have had zero pressure from the government or any left wingers. To be honest, I’m actually surprised by that.
As to why, if you read the blogs for the past few months, you’ll find some pretty strong indications. There is no “Conservative” talk show left that I enjoy listening to and my inability to cultivate a sense of community leaves me with no purpose to spend any more energy on doing this.
