Senator Kerry (decorated veteran of the Vietnam War) disclosed on the Sunday Morning TV shows what the military plan is for US involvement in Libya.
Senator Kerry stated that it would not be necessary to destroy Libya’s air defense system in order to enforce a no fly zone – all we have to do is destroy the runways at the military bases.
Translation: we don’t have to send in planes, we merely aim some sea launched cruise missiles at his runways and make big craters.
There are a couple problems with that plan. Libya has done nothing to the United States (other than upset the NY Times). If the United States unilaterally attacks Libya, we are the ones who have committed an act of war.
We don’t have international permission to do this, and are not likely to get it. Anti-colonial sensibilities in the middle east may be stronger than their fear of their citizens. What happens to the 40,000 “non-combat” troops when the Iranian tanks start coming through that lovely new tunnel between Iran and Iraq? And Pakistan overtly goes into Afghanistan to support their Taliban army and attack US & NATO forces?… And it would be a good time for North Korea to invade the South. And you never know when someone might blow up the oil pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Turkey… Or the Greeks and Turks on Cyprus to resume their conflict….
Qadaffi is not stupid enough to respond by trying to sink a US Aircraft Carrier battle group – but bombs against civilian targets in Europe are well within his means.
What Gates was saying without saying it – is the US Military is spread too thin – and we need to carefully think through the consequences. Good thing we can now legally draft openly gay men into the military.
John Effing Kerry is a four-flushing, self-aggrandizing, gilt-edged Boston Brahman phony. Aside from writing himself up for undeserved decorations, his military expertise barely rises above the edge of the tin of Kiwi shoe polish his lackeys used to shine his boots when he was in the Nam. No wonder the Dem logo is an ass.
He also happens to be the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – aren’t we glad now that Christine O’Donnell won the Republican Delaware Senate Primary and stood up for what’s right!?
Senator Carl Levin from Michigan is the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee… he’s going to have some interesting decisions to make
