Libya’s Man Made River project

England just announced that two C130 cargo planes arrived at Malta carrying civilians from the Libyan desert.

The story mentioned that at least one of the people was working on the “Man Made River” project. Libya has spent $25 billion to tap a reservior of water under the Southern Sahara Desert – this water got there from glaciers melting at the end of the last ice age. The man made river is a network of pipes that send that water north to tripoli and Benghazi.

Description & Map

If you look at Libya in Google Maps/Earth, the cities have large manmade reservoirs with no obvious source of water. Now the source is obvious.

Gangs of “rebels” arrived and stole everything they could take from the workers. In a short bit when the “provisional government” realizes looters have shut down the supply of fresh water to the city, it will be a real test of their leadership.
