The E.U. is demanding that Ireland raise its 12.5% corporate income tax rate. Ireland refuses. They understand that if they raise the taxes on businesses, those businesses will leave Ireland, creating a downward spiral of lost jobs, higher unemployment, lower real estate prices, less tax revenue, more social spending.
Bankers using government power to impose their economic power over states has been known to cause states to want to secede from a union and end up in civil war when the Union declares that a state may never leave a Union once it has joined.
