One thing you can be pretty sure about is that when Barack Obama was going to school in Indonesia and Hawaii, he didn’t learn much about U.S. History other than how evil Americans are.
After the Revolutionary war was ended, the new country was formed under the Articles of Confederation and everyone went back to their states, but the Federal government had a problem. People expected the government to have a miitary and protect the common interests but nobody wanted to pay for it.
Soldiers in the Continental Army had been paid only with promises that were not kept. The merchant class was more interested in trading with Europe than establishing a viable government, and wanted the farmers to pay the war debts, and if they didn’t, take their land.
Many of the people who had fought in the Revolution against the King ended up fighting against the country they had created. The government of the Confederation didn’t have the forces or the ability to break up the insurrection. The rebellion only ended when government forces used canons on its own citizens at Springfield, Mass in January, 1787. [UN: Cease fire!]
That confrontation was the wakeup call that led to the calling of the Consitutional Convention and the creation of a new country called the United States of America.
Not paying your military is a very risky political strategy.
