Why don’t you have subscriptions and charge? Or have ads?

Rather than reinventing the wheel, I’ll just direct you to this comment a while back

Understand your trepidation. However, you might be growing the troubles in your imagination faster than they actually occur. Take it in baby steps.

It can still be a good project. You estimate 10-20K users per day? If 10% of those users were willing to pay that would be 1000 subscribers @ $__ per month.

Put a lawyer on retainer. Hire a part-time person. Take your stuff to an accountant. Tell them you do not want problems. Refer problems to them while you write and edit your site.

It’s a reasonable conclusion that this could be my overactive imagination, however please read this:

The next day, Morris Communications (MCC) wrote me (the guy mentioned in the article) and asked that I remove all links to their stream AND web sites. The reference to a lawyer for Soundexchange is not just a random reference. BMI and ASCAP have also contacted me in the early days – just finding out what I do and who I am. When I explain its a hobby, I originate no streaming and there is no pot of gold here to share in, they went away.

The ooTunes app that lets people listen on the iPhone and iPad is under constant legal threats from pretty much all of the major station owners. My inolvement with ooTunes is that I added functional links to launch ooTunes, but we have no relationship beyond sharing information. The only reason this didn’t happen sooner is that by using ooTunes, I was able to speed up testing by probably a factor of 10 by not having to endure the video streaming ads on my slow DSL connection.

    I agree with “kadamson”.

Another angle: Why not make your site a private club. Annual dues, no ads, no conflicts with Google.

Whatever you choose to do beyond Friday; let me take this opportunity to THANK YOU for your website. As my handle implies, I am a radio junkie (don’t care much for TV) and your site has made it so much easier to listen to stations all over America. I have enjoyed reading many of the blogs and your polls… the best! Again, my heartfelt thanks and best wishes for your future endeavors. Hopefully beyond May 21, 2011.

Oh, and Fred, about the sheep, that was a baaa-aad thing.

    Hi Art,
Just wanted to be sure to tell you I have appreciated your site for a long time and the easy access to my favorite radio. It’s been nice to know exactly where I can listen while doing other things during the day.

You have provided an awesome service to like-minded concerned Americans. Your efforts will pay off & enable us to find one another now that the ball is rolling.

I wish you well and streamingradioguide.com has been incredible. Thank you very much.

    Hi,

Thanks for the great service and tool which I use on a daily basis. I’ve read the blog posts and have a question for you which, since it’s your site, you don’t have to answer. Are you shutting down your operation for personal reasons? If so, that’s your business and, once again, thanks for the terrific service you’ve provided. However, I get the sense that we, the people who use your site, have collectively done something wrong, haven’t contributed sufficiently in some meaningful way. OK you certainly have my attention. If that is the case is there something that can be done to make this right, short of exploding what is a great resource? I can’t speak for anyone else but, from a personal point of view, I’m not going to know what to do or how to contribute unless you give me some insight as to what you want. At any rate, whatever you do, thank you for all you’ve done and good luck in the future. John G.

I’m really coming to the conclusion that Geithner is an idiot, not just a misguided globalist who wants the IMF to run the world.

While he and the Federal Reserve’s Bernanke are holding interest rates as close to zero as is possible, Geithner now says he wants Americans to save more. Why would people save more money to earn 1% interest? or lock in for a longer term when most people expect inflation to come back at some point?

At the same time we are being told to save money, the government is urging us to buy stuff we can’t afford (new cars, houses, appliances) to stimulate the economy. The government itself is spending money like a drunken Pelosi, and is considering a second stimulus package.

So sorry about that post, I was letting cyber buddy read for me, this is what I wanted to say.

    Art Stone,
I just read ““strings” works something like this:”
Wow, so sorry that people can be that creepy! Definitely can’t blame you for your decision and I know understand why you chose to “Go Gault”, more and more of us will also.
I have enjoyed your site along with so many others for years and will definitely miss it! Thanks for all your years of service and it is appreciated more than I can ever say,
Just a friend in Cyber Space!

Don’t apologize for the first post, Shaw. I loved it.

Art, let me add my voice to those who thank you for years of enjoyment. Every day, I pull up your website as soon as I sit at my computer and hit the random button in the News/Talk category. I love hearing the local news all over the country. It makes me feel as if I’m in America again.

Since the site is dying on Good Friday, perhaps it will be resurrected.

God bless you, Art, and God bless America.

    Diane in Florida

Sorry to see the site go. It was a very easy web interface and the integration with ootunes was wonderful as well. I found TuneIn radio for my work android phone and just broke down last night and bought the pay version for my iPhone.

SRG will be missed. It was a good ride while it lasted…

I want to thank you for all of the work that you’ve done and I do appreciate it.

But…you know there’s always a but coming…I cannot for the life of me figure out how to download your database? When you say that there is an “option added on several of the pages to “Save to csv file”, what does that mean?

The words “save to…” are not on any page that I can find.

If I right click on any page I don’t see them either.

I do know what a CSV file is and I know how to use them but I can’t for the life of me get the list of stations off on any page that I see.

What am I missing here? Could you just create a link where we can get the data?

PS…perhaps it’s too late, but I would have been more than willing to volunteer to submit changes and corrections to the list but really, we as users of the site were never really asked to.

    Mark

  10. MarkF says:

I also cannot find where any of this on the blogs. I searched for “save” and didn’t find a thing like how to save the databases.
