All you “birthers” out there

World Net Daily has an image of what purports to be Barack Obama’s birth certificate from Kenya.

Here

I”m not a professional document examiner, but my observations since this will surely hit the fan shortly

  • Like the Hawaii certificate, this is not the original birth certificate – it is dated 1964, three years after he was born.   It is a statement that there is a birth certificate.
  • Unlike the Hawaii Certificate, the serial # is not redacted, and it states the book and page number of where the original can be found.   With that information, it should take only a few minutes to determine if this is a fake, which suggests that it probably is genuine
  • It has a raised seal, which is normal on a real document
  • His mother’s age is hard to read.    She was born in November 1942
  • 1964 was when Barack’s parents were divorced.   It’s logical that when dealing with custody, the judge would want a birth certificate
  • Kenya didn’t become independent from England until 1963, so it’s not odd that the document is in English

Glenn Beck asks the question we need to think about – if it does turn out he was born in Kenya, and further determined that it made him ineligible to become President, what happens next and are you prepared for the consequences?

Forbes Story

Cooper-Standard is another automotive parts supplier declaring Chapter 11 today.   From the Forbes story, it sounds like Ford is their main customer – they hope to dump about $600 million in debt by going though the bankruptcy.

Ira Einhorn

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

One unexpected consequence of asking a poll question is you may learn something you never knew about.   Thank you to whomever added that answer to the poll…

Ira’s story is recounted in the Wikipedia Article.   Ira was a hard core lefist radical in the 1960s and 1970s.  He was the master of ceremonies on the stage at the first Earth Day, and claims to have created the idea (other people dispute that account).  He had a long history of involvement in the anti war movement, the green movement and the other lefist causes of the day.

In 1977, he broke up with his girlfriend of 5 years, one Holly Maddox.   When she came back to Philadelphia to pick up her stuff and leave, he killed her, stuffed her body in a trunk, and put the trunk in the closet.   Being a white guy, of course the police didn’t search his house for 18 months.   He’s now sitting in jail.

But that’s not the “hook” to the story, as interesting as it is.   After he was arrested for the murder, a Philadelphia attorney by the name of Arlen Spector argued for his bail to be reduced to $40,000, and he was released on bail – and immediately fled to Europe, where he evaded capture until 1997.

I wonder why I never saw this story on 60 minutes.

Delphi Bankruptcy update

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The Delphi judge is working hard to get the GM parts maker out of bankruptcy by using a process similar to GM and Chrysler.

First, Delphi is terminating its pension plan and dumping it into the Federally run Pension Guaranty Corporation.   That means lower pension payment for existing retirees and possibly some government funding in the future.

The other big item is the judge told the Michigan Workers Compensation fund to go pound sand.  The fund is owed $120 million for past claims and a $24 million annual premium payment.    The State of Michigan is broke.  Most likely way to deal with this is to raise insurance premiums on all other Michigan employers, which means even more businesses will flee Michigan.

About 1000 fired employees with get 75% of their severance.

Not to worry – everything is under control.

Bankruptcy Watch – Stant

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aoEbT.uKdxvM

Stant makes fuel systems for GM and Chrsyler, and their bankrupties have forced this 111 year old company into bankruptcy.   They were surely one of those  creditors that Tim Geithner pushed out of the way to give GM to the UAW.

It’s hard to make cars without a gas tank and fuel pump and radiators.   I guess that 30 something year old “kid” that made these decisions about how to “fix” the car business didn’t know that.

So one more company Tim Geither will have to “save” to keep GM in business.  It won’t be the last.

Communitarian in Chief

Monday, July 27th, 2009

The brother of White House chief of staff Rahm Emanual is named Ezekiel J. Emanuel. Ezekiel is a medical doctor, who recently has worked in the Office of Bioethics at the National Institute of Hearlth, which focuses on issues like when medical care should be withdrawn and the patient “allowed” to die.

Dr Emanuel is a self-described Communitarian. What is a Commitarian and what do they believe?

Probably the short handed explanation is the quote from Star Trek: “Some times the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”, or more to the point – individual rights must give way to the needs of the collective.

Dr Emanuel is a key advisor to President Obama on the proposed National Health Care policy.

Dr Emanual’s thoughts are written down for posterity in The Ends of Human Life: Medical Ethics in a Liberal Polity. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1991.

This is definitely a person you want to keep an eye on.

Book Deleting

Monday, July 27th, 2009

From time to time the subject of “book burning” comes up when some parent objects to the content of a book in a library or a school.    Setting aside that there are two types of banning – the librarian who refuses to buy or accept a book, or quietly disposes of a book that they have a personal or political objection to, or liberal patrons who “forget” to return all 37 copies of Rush Limbaugh’s books they borrowed and the library never replaces the book…

Well, that subject is now out in full view.   With a paper book in your possession, the words printed on the page stay there as long as you have the book.    But what about the new book reader from Amazon called Kindle that lets you download and read books electronically?

The “stuff” is hitting the fan.   According to the New York Times, Amazon was selling copies of the book “1984” by George Orwell, from a publisher who did not have copyright permission to sell the book. Amazon remotely deleted the copies of the book from People’s Kindle.

Putting aside the irony for the second, this raises the question of just how far Amazon or other publishers might go in the future (or be forced to go by governments) to delete… or even worse…. modify the text… of books for political or other reasons.

What do you think?

The other side of Professor Gates

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Let’s start from the premise that the people behind Barack Obama are very smart and wiley and highly motivated to transform this country into a totalitarian socialist paradise – and they think three steps ahead of their adversaries (four steps ahead of John McCain) and are ruthless.  They wil win at all costs.

Let’s further speculate that what Professor Gates did was planned well in advance, specifically to provoke the current issue and controversy.

For those of you who are reflexively jumping to the conclusion that Professor Gates is stupid and acted recklessly and trying to stir things up…  consider for a second your own future.

You’re in your house a year from now.  A uniformed man knocks on your door and says “Hello?  I’m Sergeant Green from the Green Energy Audit Committee, and I’m here to measure your carbon outputs so we can calculate your Carbon Energy Tax”.

When you don’t come to the door, Sergeant Green announces “Mr Smith, I know you’re in there.  Just because I used to work for ACORN doesn’t mean you can ignore me.   This is a real uniform.  Please come to the door with your photo ID or I may have to call for assistance to make you comply with my lawful request.”
[…]
“Mr Smith.   We know from your gun registration records that you own a gun.   For office safety, I must now ask you to come out of your house with your hands above your head while we search your house and secure your guns for your safety.  I”m sure you can understand the reason for that.”

“I’m in my own house, I have done nothing wrong, I am not a criminal, you have no right to come into my house.  Get off my property- now”.

“Mr Smith, I’m sorry that you have resisted my lawful request.  I guess that leaves my no alternative other than to use force to comply with my lawful request. ”

Are you starting to get the picture?

Misunderstanding history

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

During a recent trip, President Obama took his family (and reporters) to Ghana to “learn” about the history of slavery.

From the 6th to 10th centuries, Baghdad had been a center for using slave labor to help establish the Baghdad Caliphate.  Slavery spread across North Africa and the Berber coast, and slavery arrived in Ghana in 1076 AD, when Islamic conquerors took control of the area.     The history of slavery and the religion of Barack Obama’s father are inseparable.   His ancestors were much more probably the slave masters than the slaves, especially in Eastern Africa.

European involvement in slavery (other than Slavs and other Eastern Europeans being enslaved by the Islamic Ottoman empire) began in the late 1400s, as the Portuguese developed the ability to build and navigate large ships that could go down the coast of Africa (and later to cross the Atlantic ocean) and return safely.

Two thirds of slavery in the Western Hemisphere occurred in the islands of the Caribbean, not the United States.   Sugar plantation owners initially brought along European slaves (“indentured servants”), but they were found to be unsuitable because of their lack of resistance to malaria  (the sickle cell disease in Africans is now believed to be a genetic mutation which offers protection against malaria).    So they began buying slaves from the dominant tribes in Africa – typically criminals or members of competing tribes who had been captured and were already in slavery in Africa for generations.

Slavery in South America was mostly due to cultivation of coffee, which was imported from Arabia and Indonesia.    By 1800, half of the population of Brazil was slaves from Africa, with some areas reaching 2/3 of the population.

In the United States, the English relied on indentured servants to do “Slave” work.  Some slaves were imported from the Caribbean – but using African slaves only became common when prosperity in England raised wages to the point that it was hard to get “slaves” from England.

Following the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, cotton became a more profitable crop.   Importation of slaves was outlawed in the United States in 1808.   The growth in the slave population from that point on was mostly due to the slave families having children.    By the beginning of the civil war in the 1860s, the population of the South was about 40% black slaves and 20% of the country as a whole, a larger percentage than today’s black population.   Later waves of European immigrants reduced the percentage of Americans with African lineage to about 12% (and that includes African immigrants with no connection to slavery in the United States, like Mr Obama).

So, now that the slave trade has been wiped out in most of Africa, how are things going in places like Ghana?  I thought I would peek in Google Earth and see what there was to see.   I was a little surprised to see a railway system on the map, although Google Earth’s often shows places a rail line has ever been – even if it was torn up 40 years ago…  but there is some evidence that the lines are still in use.

They were built in 1923 as narrow gauge railways to carry materials from the inland areas to the coast for exportation.    Ghana won its independence from English colonial rule in 1957, and that’s the point at which history stops, similar to the 1950s cars common in Cuba.   In the 50 years since, the railways have fallen into disrepair, and what rolling stock there is has rusted and deteriorated.   The railway now carries only 4% of the freight and 1% of passenger traffic in the country.

In the past 2 years, the government of Ghana has entered in a deal to allow China to fund rebuilding their railway to standard gauge, and build a new railroad line, using the “best railway engineers in the world” from Korea.

Ghana has productive gold mines, and one of the partners in the project is an oil company.

To get a sense of daily life in Ghana, here is a little news story from 2007 about problems at the railway station in Kantamanto, Ghana

http://www.thestatesmanonline.com/pages/news_detail.php?newsid=4930&section=1

Last year, following a story in this paper which revealed the high level of criminality at the station, the police carried out a sweep which netted a number of persons on the police wanted list. However, a visit to the station a few weeks later revealed that the gang members were back in full force.

The unemployed youth, who have erected tents along the railways lines, wander about aimlessly and engage in mobile phone snatching, attack innocent passengers, rape and deal in all kinds of drugs at the station.

They also use the station as a hide out to perpetrate their heinous activities.

Investigations carried out by this paper indicate that the railway station area is a ‘no go area’ especially during the night; this was confirmed by the Area Manager who said, “you dare not pass the station in the night.”

According to Mr Ativor, the railway authorities rely on the Police Station meant for the area but a lack of personnel and equipment have rendered their efforts ineffective.

In a related development, traders who were banned from selling on the rail lines sometime ago have ignored the order and carrying out their activities with impunity.

All kind of wares ranging from second hand clothing, shoes, table top mobile phone unit transfer points, foodstuffs such as tomatoes, cassava, yam, etc are displayed on the rail lines. They withdraw the items temporarily whenever the train passes.

This is one possible version of the future of what America could become.  If you’ve spent any time in Detroit, since the early 1970s you know that it can happen here.

“So called” Christians

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Remember Sally Struthers crying for the starving children and begging you to help the Christian Children’s Fund?

Well, a group called Ministry Watch blew the whistle on the organization in 2004, indicating that their research found no connection between the organization and anything “Christian” – other than to entice Christians to give. As a result of that investigation, the organization recently has been renamed to ChildFund International.

MinistryWatch describes ChildFund as more of a Community Development Organization – the organization has no statement of faith, doesn’t require its members to be of any faith, does no religious teaching and does not engage in trying to get people to become Christians. The fund was originally called the China Children’s Fund.

But the important thing is we’re saving the Children, after all.
